Re: Wrongly accused of being in a RTA

I have been with Egg for years. Other than a replacement window I've never claimed, so my no claims bonus was looking nice & healthy. I don't think I will be with them this time next year 'ahem'. Somebody once told me to go with Zurich, not cheap, but the solicitors choice as they fight for you to the extreme...maybe its worth paying the extra?

A friend just told me BBC 'The One Show' have done a 'crash for cash' feature on tonights show. I've got the insurance fraud bureaus number. If Egg don't come back to me tomorrow and start pulling their fingers out I may give the IFB a call and see what they can advise before I go to the Police Station again.

Thanks again for all the replies, it is a help.

    Hi Taikop,

I have to say, I am in complete agreement with the board. Mistakes do happen, but their blatant disregard for the situation and failure to call you back should be addressed.

Just out of interest, who are the insurers so we know who to avoid? What made you pick them as an insurer when you started the policy etc.?

    coney:

I cannot believe your insurance company are treating you the way they are. No customer service and what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? When it comes to renewal I'd stick two fingers up at them!

Exactly what the desk clerk said when I went to the police station. Many thanks to conmankiller & Coney for your advice. I still havent heard from 'split liability' so am giving them till 5pm tomorrow. If they don't call I will certainly take your advice & go back to the police station.

The desk clerk did say they do get instances of people being slammed with congestion charges whilst claiming they've never been to London. The clerk said sometimes it is found that two cars do have the same registration but never said it was cloning. My car has an essex registration, but I don't live there and have never been to Essex. It was originally a company car so it was possibly part of a fleet registered at the same time. Its also quite a common model for taxi drivers to use so I'm sure it would not have been the only car bought new at the time by the original dealer/owner. I'm hoping it is just somebody writing down the wrong registration, but so far I'm at a loss to prove their mistake as my word seems futile and I'm kind of fighting blind.

Your advice is first rate though and I will take it and request the police investigate further should the insurers leave me hanging much longer.

    Huge Thanks to you both.

Re: Wrongly accused of being in a RTA

I totally agree with Conmankiller. I am a police officer and by what your saying the plates have been cloned and some idiots have been involved in an accident. When you go to the police station ask to speak with a police officer, not a front desk clerk. The officer can then check the registration number of your vehicle and if it has been involved in an accident elsewhere in the country and the other party has reported it to the police there will be an information report on your registration that the vehicle was invloved in a non stop accident. If this is the case then the cops should have completed a accident report. If they have, get the incident number, officers collar number and report this to your insurance company.

I cannot believe your insurance company are treating you the way they are. No customer service and what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty? When it comes to renewal I'd stick two fingers up at them!

Re: Wrongly accused of being in a RTA

I went to the local police station and showed them the letter. The desk officer searched the database & confirmed there was nothing on record regarding me or my car.

I think that is where the answer to your problem exists, go back to the Police and tell them you have strong concerns that someone may have, "cloned" your car registration number plates and be driving around committing offences, they are duty bound to investigate this complaint.

Ask the Police to ring your insurance company stating they are investigating a crime, you will find that your insurance company is obliged to provide all the details and proof concerning this alleged incident to the Police, if they refuse then they could be charged with obstructing the Police in the execution of their duty.

Wrongly accused of being in a RTA

On friday I received a letter from my insurers. It stated I had failed to inform them I had been involved in an accident. It said that my failure to advise them of the accident was in breach of my Terms & conditions etc It also said costs would be recovered & my no claims affected.

It was one of the most 'you are hung before you even stood trial' letters I have ever read.

I immediately rang the number quoted on the letter. It was the wrong insurance company so the call centre agent duly transferred me. The next adviser then gave me a lecture on how its quite common for people to try and wriggle out of accidents, or to get details wrong. I told her...'I HAVE NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT'...I don't think she believed me. She assured me somebody from 'split liability' would call...they didn't.

I went to the local police station and showed them the letter. The desk officer searched the database & confirmed there was nothing on record regarding me or my car.

I call my insurers customer service the next day. A gentleman basically sings me the same tune which sounds like,'someone has said you were in an accident, therefore you will lose your no claims, mistakes do happen but theres very little you can do...if you are very lucky you might get it cleared up before your policy is up for renewal..basically we have to play devils advocate and take the third partys word for it...'...and I point out I pay insurance to primarily protect myself and would hope my insurers would put me first also...I never thought I would end up feeling so utterly victimised by my own insurance company.

Once again...I have never had an accident in my car. I rarely drive it other than going to work as I like walking and being driven about by my other half in his car. They wont tell me anything about the supposed accident, no date, no time, no third party details. They even offered to help me fix my car??? My car is in mint condition and never had any accident so why would it need fixed arrrgh.

Is it really so easy for people to pick a car, pick any car & make fraudulent claims? And if so what protection do innocent victims like me have?

Two sleepless worry filled nights on...Any help or advice or words of reassurance would be hugely appreciated.
