    Re: wireless broadband

I rekon i know what the problem is.

Go to Network connections right click on your wireless connection. go to properties.

double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) it should be in the list. click on the option to "Use the following IP address"

Type in the IP address box. 192.168.0.66. press Tab. subnet mask should automatically fill itsself in with 225.225.225.0

default gateway you will probably want 192.168.0.1. thats the IP address of the router you are using. where the internets come from. the DNS server stuff you can usually leave blank.

Dont bother ringing your ISP they wont care especially if your dad computer can connect to the internets.

You may also want to check your LAN settings. Open internet explorer. Go to tools>Internet options>connections click on lan settings and untick all of the box's

    Have fun :)

    Re: wireless broadband

    Hi

I've just re-read my post and I don't think my instructions are clear (I was distracted at the time!) Firstly you check with your broadband provider to find out what encryption they use. You can check to see if your system is compatible by going into

Start, settings, network settings, choose your wireless connection which should be listed, right click on it, select properties, wireless connections.

Choose your router name and select configure. In the network authentication box if your system has not been updated the default will be WEP. You can then either:

    1. log into your router settings, select WEP and get the system to generate a passphrase which you will need to enter into the network authentication box above or

    2. download the microsoft patch as per my previous email and once this has been installed, if you go into the network authentication box by going to start, settings, network settings etc choose WPA-PSK and enter the passphrase in the network key box below. WPA-PSK is a more secure method of encryption so this is probably the better option.

I hope this helps (if this is the problem!)

    Re: wireless broadband

    Hi

Your problem sounds alot like the one that I had when I first installed my wireless card which turned out to be a conflict with the security encryption between my laptop (XP but without service pack 2 installed so it used WEP) and the router which used WPA-PSK. If this is the problem you'll need to download the microsoft patch (using your ethernet cable) to upgrade your system http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=009D8425-CE2B-47A4-ABEC-274845DC9E91&displaylang=en
change the setting to WPA (go to Start, settings, network connections, select the wireless card and configure) and use the username and password provided with your router.

Remove your ethernet cable and try your wireless connection again.

    Hope this works.

    Re: wireless broadband

    Try this.

    Click Start
    Run
    Type cmd and press enter.

    A Black Window will appear.

Type ping google.com and press enter.

If it says unreachable or timed out then its likely your connection is down and you should ring your supplier and report it.

If you get responses then it might be a problem with Internet Explorer.

    Re: wireless broadband

    Hello julianna,

This is a common issue but does not have direct solution; your laptop is connected to the wireless network based on what you have said which in this case is the router.
However your laptop does not know to connect through the internet via this connection.

There are a few things you can try.

    1. Go into my network places and disable any other connection apart from the wireless connectiod
(Connectiod’s such as “Local area connection” things like that)

    2. Ensure all dial up connections are removed as not to confuse the laptop, do this via internet connection on the control panel in my computer

    3. You can then set up a "home office or small office network” (something like that) there should be a button on the left of my network places to do this.
Follow the on screen instructions, ensuring you choose the option that reflects your status, (usually: "this computer connects to the internet via a gateway)
Once done the restart the laptop.

These steps are assuming that Windows is in control of the connection. If the wireless receiver has it's own software then use that.

    I hope this helps.

    Mike.

    Re: wireless broadband

No it was originally just bradband but a few months ago it was converted to wireless and people in the house have been using it for months. It says when i try to repair it, contact your ISP, but i dont even know what that is. I printed out details on the main computer with all the adresses etc to use when connecting a new computer but it still wont connect.
I have no idea of I'm doing anything right, if anyone could give me any sort of steps to try I would be very very grateful!

    Re: wireless broadband

Is it a new internet connection?

You might have not put the login details for your internet service provider into the wireless routers control panel.
