Don't think insurance groups are "linear" in terms of premium - just spoke to my future son-in-law who drives an Seat Ibiza 1.9TDi - he is paying over £600 (altho' admittedly he is a couple of years younger than you)

but according to this - http://www.thatcham.org/abigrouprating/index.jsp?page=343 - my insurance group is only 6.

Yours is between 2 + 5 depending on model etc.

    1.9 TDI Sport - there's your reason for the high premium - I'm paying ~ £200 for a basic 1.2 CORSA - I've been driving without claims for ~ 30 years!

sorry, I didn't say : my renewal is only about 30 quid more than last year. It's not that my renewal has gone up massively, it's more that it's never been very low!! That's the bit i don't understand.

    Re: Why so high?

I don't know if you have been with your current insurer for a longish period of time or not but it may be worth a phone call to then direct to ask for a reduction.

I also had many years NCB with a company doing a Multi-Bike policy covering a Harley, a 1.8 litre Custom Trike and 2 other large Italian bikes. About 4 years ago my policy renewal price started increasing by a large percentage even though nothing had changed. I called them up and asled them to reconsider and was given a £50 to £80 reduction on each of the next 3 renewals, it only cost a phone call to try.

Another reason could be that Insurers like other Financials are probably getting a hammering with their share value these days and the poor souls may be trying to get their profits back on track.

    Re: Why so high?

    Hi Matt,

I work alongside commercial insurance brokers and they are currently advising clients that insurance premiums are going up this year on average by 10-15% as insurance companies are suffering heavily on investment funds due to the current economic climate and the increased premiums are to put some money back into the coffers to cover potential future losses.

This coupled with all the scumbag uninsured drivers and fake whiplash claims mean we're all having to stump up a little bit more on renewal.

    Why so high?

    Hi,

I've just got my renewal through for my car insurance and I can't understand why it's so high. I've tried all the comparison websites and they're quoting similar prices.

I'm 34, live in a small village in cheshire, have been driving for 13 years, full ncb + never made any claims or have any convictions. I also have my wife on the policy who's 35, driving for 18 years, never made any claims but does have a TS10 (not stopping at traffic lights) from 2 years ago. The car I'm insuring is a VW Polo 1.9 TDI Sport from '02, worth about £3500.

My renewal is coming in at £422 (with Zurich) and I can't get it down further at all. Has anybody got any idea why it's so high? any tips for getting it down or companies recommended?

    cheers

    Matt
