Why is third party only more expensive than fully comp?

It is just the way Insurers work out the pricing. Comp is cheaper because most people have that cover.

If the car is of low value and you are not bothered about own damage, but want to cover yourself against third party risk and have cover for your windscreen, you might as well go for a comp policy, with a higher voluntary excess. The excess is damage to your own car, so if it is not worth much, you might as well have a higher excess.

I hate this whole process of searching every year for a new car insurer. This year's elephant trap seems to be, who ever I search with, that I can't save money by choosing third party only insurance. My car isn't worth much - its a P reg Astra. That's why third party only seems a worthwhile way to save money. But is it also the reason for the anomaly?
