    Who owns who?

Prior to the Northern Rock crisis few people would have thought it possible that a UK bank could go bust. Now, however, as the turmoil in the banking sector continues, many savers are nervous about the security of their savings. Clare Francis looks at the ownership of the major savings providers and explains some of the things you need to bear in mind...

    Re: Who owns who?

With the nationalisation of Bradford and Bingley I am totally confused...

Your article says not to put money in both Asda and B&B as they share a FSA registration. So how come the joint owner of both can just walk away from one and still keep reaping in the cash from the other leaving us - the tax payers - with THEIR bad debts?

It seems to me another example of the FSA having no teeth, and the best they ever do is a good gumming leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill of greedy banks and an incompetent FSA.

    Re: Who owns who?

    Hi Niki,

We're just in the process of updating the article to cover yesterday's events. As far as the bad debts are concerned, it seems the government decided to step in to prevent further damage to the economy.

You may find the HM Treasury statement on the Government guarantee arrangements for Bradford and & Bingley (B&B), quite interesting. Click here to read their press release.

You can read the Financial Services Authority statement by clicking here.

You can read Asda Financial Services' statement by clicking here.

It would be good to hear what other members think of the government rescue of B&B - was this the right decision or do you feel they should not have interfered with the free market?

    Re: Who owns who?

Ref the update on 3 Oct...

Isn't Heritable Bank owned by Landsbanki? And didn't Tesco buy out RBS so that it has 100% control of its Personal Finance?

    Thanks, bboy.

    Re: Who owns who?

    They do indeed, bboy.

I'll make sure the article is updated to reflect this.

    Many thanks.

    Re: Who owns who?

Article useful but the footnotes are confusing - two 3* ones and no 4* ones - so where is the 4* footnote re Virgin?

    Thanks
