Which router is best to use with VirginMedia

    Hi

I have more than one computer in the house and my own personal one is linked to virginmedia directly through a television line but the internet box connection is not wireless. This means that the others are having to link up on another broadband connection through the BT line which is wireless - the virgin is by far the fastest as I am on the XL broadband package. The other one is through SKY and I am at present on the free package having SKY tv, sky talk and the broadband. Can anyone help me with a wireless connection that is compatible with Virgin media.

Belkin but if you are using a Virgin Cable Modem, you have to box a bit clever and use a hub to connect the modem to the network, and from this to the wireless router.

Seems that you have been able to help on both questions raised - I will be following your advice as we are in need of this pdq.

I am not sure if I am too late but the Virgin Media cable modem has an RJ45 connection. This means that you can plug it into any router/switch that has an ethernet port.

I have VM BB XL (20Mb) and connect the cable modem to a Linksys WRT54G router using one of the ethernet ports on the back. This leaves 3 others available.

You can also upgrade the firmware on this model (depending on the model version). I have Tomato firmware on it which allows me to set up wireless hotspots, have good stats on bandwidth usage etc

Re: Which router is best to use with VirginMedia

Thanks Stuart - as they say better late than never. You have replied just in time as the first router I purchased has now stopped working - I bought it through the Virgin website and the chat room person suggested the Dynamode - not much good as it has only lasted two months!! I have the XL package and curretly run three laptops from it wirelessly - well we did until the other night. We are stuck linking up to the SKY router now and only have the free broadband so not much Mb for three computers.

I think I will try the one you have suggested although not sure about the firmware - I'm not that technical, I just like things to work. It sounds as though you have what I need, so will pop into the local computer store in the morning with your suggestion - if I have any problems I will be back on here looking for help tomorrow.

    Cynthia,

If you have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRT54G, you can learn all about the model. You may not be able to get this through PCworld etc nowadays but there are always plenty of them available on ebay such a http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Linksys-wireless-G-broadband-router-WRT54G-ct_W0QQitemZ330214606069QQihZ014QQcategoryZ44997QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The sky router is normally a netgear dg834GT which is similar to the Linksys (Lynksys is part of Cisco which is one the major router/switch manufacturers in the world) but is for ADSL 2+.

Changing the firmware (or upgrading to latest version by the manufacturer) is always a good idea as it allows you to try to reduce problems.

If you do want to try it, just let me know and I can walk you through how to do it on a WRT54G.

    Hi Stuart

Thanks for all your help - I went out today with the recommendations you gave me, went into the local independent computer store and asked them for the Linskys ...... model. They didn't have one in store but suggested the Netgear which is easy to fix up and offered help at the end of the telephone line - bought it immediately it is now fixed up and I am working from my laptop with ease.

Thanks for your help and offer to talk through but fortunately do not need it.

    Cheers,

    Cynthia

    Man,

Unfortunately, the Netgear DG834G will not work directly as a cable modem. The Netgear DG834G is a combination ADLS modem/router. ADSL and Cable are different technologies. There is usually no way to connect the ADSL router to a cable modem.
