    Re: Which provider?

Yes. There are a few options with other providers and the phone socket, there's cable and there's the mobile phone network. I use a dongle to connect to the mobile phone network. It's not as fast as a landline but it suits me as I carry the dongle with me to connect at both my home and work addresses but I'm only paying one broadband subscription and no landline rental. If you google around for mobile broadband, you should find something worth a try but it's sensible not to commit to a long contract unless you are sure that it is suitable for your needs, your address, etc.

otts007:Hi, thanks for your reply. I remember in the "old days" you had to have a BT landline to get internet through any provider. Has that now changed?

The short answer is yes. Legislation required BT to 'unbundle' their exchanges because they had a monopoly which was deemed to be uncompetitive.

    Re: Which provider?

Yes, Sky will be likely to offer you a deal for broadband and TV. What's available will depend on your area. Details will be on their web site.

If you do not use a lot of internet bandwidth, you can also consider mobile broadband. It's worth trying before you decide and you can get a dongle (instead of the phone line) plus a month's connection for £30 or so. If it's right for you, the ongoing cost might be £15 per month. If you decided to disconnect the landline, you would probably need to give BT notice and there might be a cancellation fee if you've not had the line for long.

There are a handful of services which use a landline to confirm ID but I've not had any problems since I cancelled my landline a couple of years ago.

    Which provider?

Hi I have my landline with BT costing £20 a month. I NEVER use my landline as I have loads of free minutes on my mobile, but need it I understand to get Broadband. My Broadband is with Orange costing £20 a month, and I also have a Sky subscription costing £31 a month.

Would I save money by combining these all into 1 package. What's recommended, with the least hassle and no loss of service? I am on a contract with Sky and want to keep Sky TV, I just need to give 30 days notice for Orange.

    thanks for any advice.
