Is there a full list of which bank owns which other banks? If I would like to split my savings in 35k chunks so that I´m protected if the bank system goes into meltdown but I´m aware that banks which appear separate to us consumers may in fact be linked and therefore you only get one 35k allowance. Can anyone help? May thanks

The main names to be aware of are

Halifax + Bank of Scotland = HBOS (also include Birmingham Midshires and 45% of Sainsbury Bank)

Royal Bank of Scotland includes Nat West, Ulster Bank and 50% of Tesco Finance

Barclays owns The Woolwich

Citigroup includes Prudential and Egg Banking

There are others, of course. Most banks have joint ventures and shareholdings with some of their "competitors" but a small stake or joint venture doesn't make them the same group.

just to let you know that 35k allowance thing isnt applicable to Abbey as they are owned by a non british bank.
