    hi

if u pay 2000 for 100Mb u should use mobile BB nobody share with you and they will launch low price monthly plan,

in other country like Australia Singapore China Hong Kong, mobile BB limited plan only 20pd to 25pd /mth, so they have a lot of space to gain to make huge profits do not pay too much to your recent BB

    hi

u really crazy for the 100Mb, i use virgin long time from 2MB to 20MB, actually i think cable should be better, but i use moneysupermarket to test the speed found only 0.5 up and download, so i change to use BTline next month, i contact their CS reply should have 15to20 Mb but i said it is a share base, u cannot make sure u give me the min. speed, so they say 20Mb, = 0.5Mb 100Mb may be 2.5Mb do u agree.

Before they chase that target, perhaps they should sort out their national broadband service and bring it up to some sort of usable average. Virgin seems to be at the back of the queue when demand increases, and here in the sticks, a whole 7.5 miles from the nearest large exchange, my 8Mb connection drops to below dialup speeds for entire evenings if anyone else in the village is watching iPlayer. It's never faster than 3.8Mb - which usually only happens on weekday mid-morning....

If the 100Mb service was priced proportionally to what I actually get, it would cost nearly £2000 a month.

Let's hope the 50p landline tax has a positive impact in rural areas.

Mobile broadband hasn't helped much in the remote parts as mobile coverage is usually poor and getting 3G is impossible in many areas which aren't remote! Dial-up is so slow and unreliable as many sites 'time out' before they've actually loaded. A lot of people just don't have internet access.

Many rural business have had to pay for satellite broadband, for which the initial set up costs are well over £1,000 and monthly fees are well over £100 per month, sometimes as much as £400.

Any help this site can give to the campaign to ensure there are no 'Not Spots' within the UK would be much appreciated.

    Good point, andypandy932,

I suppose that's what the 50p landline tax is trying to address. We'll have more information coming next week on what we can all do to help make sure as many people get online as possible. So watch this space...

What's the current state of broadband access in rural areas? Is it still mainly dial-up connections? Has mobile broadband made any real difference?

BenG1 - Good to hear a postive story about a provider. I'm with BT and I'm not sure I'd be willing to part with £60 a month for a faster internet connection - even if I could afford it. That money could be much better spent in my household.

To me, this comes back to the basics of why pay for broadband access in the first place: if it's saving me money, it's a no-brainer. If it's costing me money, I'm paying for the privilege of having it.

Re: Virgin to offer 100MB broadband by end of the year

What about those people who still can't access broadband at all? Why should they pay this proposed landline tax for other people to benefit when they have to pay sometimes more than £300 per month for satellite broadband?

There's not enough being done to ensure that the whole country can access broadband before high speed is implemented in the more populated areas. I appreciate that there probably aren't many people on this site who can't get broadband but please spare a thought for this minority living in very rural parts of the country.

I'm on their 20mb XL package right now and the broadband is excellent. It's £35 (approx) on its own, which I find a bit steep personally.

I WOULD be prepared to upgrade to 100mb though - I'd love it in fact. But I can see them charging upwards of £60 for it and it's just not worth it. I'll see what sort of XL package they come up with it included but as it's already £90 I can't see it being value for money still!

Re: Virgin to offer 100MB broadband by end of the year

This will, presumably be for "cable" customers only - the nearest available "cable port" to me must be about 70 miles away - which is a bit too far !!!

I will have to survive with my (at best) 2Mb ADSL connection for a while yet......

What do you think? I think it'll be interesting to see how much they're going to charge and how they re-structure their existing tariffs/packages.

That's a seriously fast connection though and means that streaming things like music, video, films, tv will be much, much easier.

How much would you be prepared to pay for 100MB download speed?
