Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Hi Caroline
Thanks for your post.
OK so you're now with Virgin Media and you have a V+ set top box and a modem. Am I right?
Is your modem wireless? If not then basically you need to either get a wireless router to attach to your modem or you need to go back to Virgin Media and ask for a wireless modem upgrade.
You also need to make sure that you're laptop or computer has a wireless data card as well.
It sounds like you've just got a modem with no wireless connectivity - basically the modem needs to plug into the V+ box in order for the video on demand part of the service to work.
Let me know how you get on?
Cheers
Jason

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Caroline1951:I have just swapped my digi box for a Virgin+ box. I was given a free standing modem and was told I could just attach this to my wireless connection. I now cannot get onto the Internet. When I right click on my netgear it says it is working so why can't I get on to the Internet? It only works if I go straight from the modem to my computer. I dont want my pc in my lounge so I am really stuck ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT. ps I am not very IT, so any help needs to be in idiot terms.
Can you give me the model name and numbers of the modem and wireless box and I will see if I can figure it out for you.

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Thanks for the reply Jason. Virgin supplied me with a modem which is plugged into the back of my V+ box. I was also in possession of a NETGEAR Wireless connection which I have plugged into the back of the modem and also my pc. but I still cannot log onto the internet. I don't know what to do now.

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Oh I think I know what you have done...
Connect the modem to the wireless router and then connect the router to your V+ box...
You might need to go out and buy another ethernet cable though as they usually only supply one.

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Thanks Immo, I have had a look and its like this.
I have cable and that is screwed into the back of the modem virgin gave me.
They also supplied an ethernet cable which is also in the back of the modem
I put the other end of the ethernet cable into the back of my wireless connection and it still does not work even although when I go to network connections and right click on my wireless i says it is connected, the strenghth is good along with the speed.
If I take te ethenet cable out of my wireless connection and put into my pc it works okay.
I have fiddled around so much this last couple of weeks I have probably made things worse. I seem to have lost the little red light thing on start up, this is connected to my wireless, could this be the trouble? I can't see how to uninstall NETGEAR to start all over again and the disc got from Blueyonder years ago one says netgear wirless install drivers and the ther welcome to broadband internet. I am scared to take anything off. I was given a virgin broaband cd when I changed to V+ As you can see I am in right old mess now. Any other ideas?
Regards Caroline

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Hi Caroline,
I'm making several assumptions about your setup, but assuming that your router is setup correctly and you can connect to the router wirelessly from your PC then the problem is probably MAC address related.
If your connection works when you connect directly to the modem from your PC, but not when you put the router between the modem and the PC, this is probably caused by the modem being locked to the MAC address of the PC.
I' m assuming here that you originally connected your PC to the modem via an ethernet cable? The network card in your PC has a unique MAC address number which may be locked to the modem. Eg any other computer or router you attach will have a different MAC address so will be blocked.
In order to connect you probably need to change a setting in the router to give out the same MAC address on your PC. This will fool the modem into thinking it is connected to the original PC and this will enable it to work. This is normal with the NTL service.
You say you are not very IT, so step by step.
I have assumed that you have a PC running Windows XP, if this is not the case let me know.
First you need to find the MAC address of your PC. To do this, go to the START menu and select RUN, in the box that opens type CMD and press return.
A window with a black background should open. Type the following and press return
ipconfig /all
(note there is a space between "ipconfig"and "/all"
You should see some text appear. What you are looking for is the Physical address of your network adapter.
It should read something like
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 1
Physical address: 00-A0-00-00-B8-0E
Make a careful note of the physical address, write it down, being careful not to confuse the letter O with zeros.
If you get this far, let me know and I will explain what you need to do next.
Cheers

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Caroline,
Just to let you know in case you wanted to try it yourself, the next stage would be to go to the router's control panel (which I assume you can do as you've already set it up for wireless?) and there will be a setting that lets you change the MAC address of the router to the one you have on your PC. I don't know netgear equipment but it should be there somewhere.
You shouldn't really need any additional software, the stuff on the NTL CDs used to be awful and it really is mostly unnecessary stuff.
If the problem IS caused by MAC filtering you usually see that their is a connection, but no data (eg internet access) which does seem to match the symptoms you are describing?

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Ok Caroline, your PC's network adapter has the physical MAC address:
00-0D-61-66-56-6D
What is the name/model number of the wireless router?
Do you know how to open the routers control panel. Its usually via a web address such as 192.168.11.1 ?
Essentially what we are going to do is to set the routers physical mac address to 00-0D-61-66-56-6D so the modem will still think its connected to your original PC.
Cheers

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Hi Kantblue
The details I gave you came from the wireless USB adaptor
I have just looked at the bottom of the router itself and it says
Serial: MR88144SB707301
Mac: 00095BDAF0BA

Re: Virgin+ Box/NETGEAR Wireless connection
Caroline,
What is the make/model of the Router itself, not the usb adaptor.
