    Utility Warehouse wireless router

    Hi,

I am considering the UW broadcall (phone+broadband) packages Standard (19.99£) and Plus (24.99£) for my new place. I would be happy with the Standard download limit (40GB) but really fancy the wireless router offered with the PLUS option (I have a MAC laptop). Is it worth spending 5£/month more for a wireless router or would I be better off buying one myself and just use it with the standard plan?

Can anyone advise on wireless routers compatible with UW broadband?

    Thanks

I would imagine that any router would be compatible but personally, for security reasons, I wouldn't touch a wireless router. Unless you get clued up with the encryption options, any neighbour with a router can monitor your browsing.

I'd make sure you wise up on how to secure your wireless router before you even consider getting one. Especially with a download limit, you could find other people using your internet connection and maxing out your limit! Also, I'd worry more about finding a wireless adapter that would work with your Mac (unless it comes built in of course). Wires are always safer and faster, but of course they come with limitations.

    Thank you loantime.

I'm not an IT expert but I thought I would be OK with just a password to prevent my neighbours from using my download limit. Now, I am not completely fool and would rely on wires for banking and credit card purchases. As for the Mac itself, I have always used it in wireless areas and never had any problem (used to access other people's wireless myself!). I know a password might be easy to be cracked but I will be only surfing the web. I am only wondering whether any wireless router will do or the UW uses specific ones.

    Thanks again

If you are seriously considering UW Broadcall package, u wont regret it, as to the wireless router i'd recommend the standard one which would be a healthy choice.. wireless signals can be harmful to human body...

If you pay the extra £5 a month, you will fork out £60 over the next 12 months. How much is a wireless router?

I got a Belkin G ADSL wireless router from Argos for £40 and I've had no problems with it. If you're set on Wireless, you're much better off getting one of these than paying the extra per month to your provider. They're compatible with all except Virgin broadband as far as I know.

There you go Skywalker. Thank you Mallory. I will try it. I can always bring it back to Argos and get my money back if I am not happy with it.

Savemoney, I appreciate your comments but I am a bit sceptical that it would make a difference at all. Even if I don't use a wireless router myself, I'm surrounded by the signals coming from my neighbours. At the moment I don't have broadband but my Mac detects up to 5 different encrypted networks through its airport. We should also take into account Mobile phones and microwaves. If these signals/radiations are harmful, it won't make a difference the fact that I am not using a wireless router. It'd be like passive smoking I guess.

    Thanks
