My brother took quite a good poilcy with Amex for a year in South America, and he needed winter sports cover too - which was included in the policy. Plus they recognised the name over there which helped when he needed to claim. Might be worth a punt ;-)

As a NZ taxpayer she will be entitled to free public health care, irrespective of whether she has cover or not.  This will probably also cover some physio and other allied health workers, although not if she sees them privately.  The NZ public health care system is not in as bad a state as the NHS, and would give perfectly great care.

Winter travel insurance is probably cheaper if it's organised there, and she can shop around for better deals.

    Hope she has fun!

You need to decide what sort of things you want to insure against. If your daughter registers with a GP, there will be nothing to pay for any medical treatment (except a nominal fee for GP visits, prescriptions and out-patients) in New Zealand. You are much less likely to be a victim of theft in NZ than here. If it was my daughter (she was born while we were in NZ but the same would apply to our son who was born in the UK), I would put the £375 on one side in case it's needed and not bother with insurance. Doing winter sports in a country without a proper health service would be a different story.

For a 12 month stay, I would recommend that she registers with a GP in NZ as soon as practical. Some useful information is here.

Travel Insurance for New Zealand Long Stay

My daughter is travelling to New Zealand this week-end , she's just returned 3 weeks ago after spending the past year back-packing and has decided she wants to spend another 12 month in New Zealand, she has a visa and job lined up for her. Unfortunately she broke a bone in her hand last week-end (I know, travel the world and luckily no incident, then come home and break a bone) She has had the arm half-casted so that she is able to fly but we are having trouble finding insurance that is reasonably priced, also they ask if winter sports cover is needed but as at the moment it is Summer time in New Zealnd and the snow season isn't until around May, should we just get insurance for 5 months stay and then re-new it in May to include winter sports cover? We have tried a few insurance quotes but they either will not cover for over 35 days stay or are way too expensive, one quote was for £375.00 . Any help would be much appreciated.
