Travel insurance - cancellation of trip due to pregnancy

    Hi all,

Have a travel insurance policy (insurewithease.com - silver cover) which includes cancellation and curtailment and was wondering if they would reimburse me for flights and car hire. Situation is as follows::

    - Booked and paid for flights and a car hire for a holiday in Sept 2009 on 10th Feb 2009

    - Took out annual travel insurance starting 5th March 2009 (because we have another short holiday starting that day)

    - Just found out we will be 7.5-9 months pregnant in Sept and so dont wont to/probably can't fly in Sept

    - Flights are not refundable but changeable at a cost

Is the insurance company likely to accept a claim to get the flight/car hire costs refunded?

Any thoughts or experience of this situation appreciated

    Raj

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Gary,

No replies unfortunately. Plan to call the insurance company about 3 months before the trip.

Maybe able to get Taxes and Fees back from Ebookers but not the actual flight cost. If thats the case will try and get back just the flight costs and car rental from the insurance company. May help to get a doctors note nearer the time to prove you can;t fly.

Though knowing what insurance companies are like not holding out much hope.

Let me know if you have any luck

    Raj,

why don't you look at the terms and conditions in the policy? I'm not sure if pregnancy will be covered, but then isn't pregnancy supposed to be a planned condition? Hehehe /me waits for the brickbats to be thrown.......

Hi Raj you really should read your policy rather than make hopeful posts to forums. You will find the relevant exclusion at the bottom of page 12...

    Hi

My advise is as with the other posts on here, the only sure way to find out is to read through all of your policy wording (including the small print), insurewithease have a very approachable and good customer service so I would encourage you to contact them direct should you be unsure of anything relating to your policy.

    thanks

    Raj,

I too have had a Silver policy with insurewithease.com although luckily i have not had to make a claim yet.!

I believe that if you were unaware of the pregnancy when you took out the policy then you would be able to make a cancellation claim against the policy.

I hope this helps and good luck with with the baby!

Re: Travel insurance - cancellation of trip due to pregnancy

    Hi all,

I was refunded some money from eBookers and plan to put in a claim for the remainder. Need to get the GP to fill out a section of the claim form and hopefully I will be able to recoup the total cost.

Will post an update when I have further information

    Thanks

Re: Travel insurance - cancellation of trip due to pregnancy

    All,

Just a final update on this.

Out of the total cost (car hire and flights) of approx £1065 I got £440 refunded from eBookers, and £440 from the insurance. The remainder £!85 lost was £130 excess on policy, £35 ebookers cancellation Fee and £20 from the car hire as this wasn't covered on my policy (the remainder of the car hire cost was refunded from eBookers)

All in all happy with outcome.

Basically any thing thats non-refundable from your costs (including the flight taxes which in my case was a major portion) you should be able to claim on given you have the GP sign the appropriate forms (cost of £20 for us)

    Raj

BTW - Customer service was good (even though at first they said we weren't due anything not having taking into account all the non-refundable costs (i.e taxes) When we broke down what we thought we were due they agreed)
