Thanks Huckster - that is basically what I was thinking. Travel cards did not exist the last time I went abroad! At the moment I can find a fee free card with 1.20 for a £1. It is the postage and "buy back" option that really reduces this to slightly over the Post Office current rate of 1.13.

Depends on what exchange rate you are being given. Personally, I tend to use a credit card for purchases and take money for day to day spending.

With Travel Cards, it would depend on the t&c's of these. They must have to make some profit somehow, so there must be some catch, otherwise they would not offer them.

    Travel card or cash?

I have a Nationwide Select credit card which does not charge for overseas purchases, and a Flexaccount card which charges for ATM withdrawals.

I am going to Austria at the end of the month and am not sure whether to take a pre-loaded travel money card, which does not charge for ATM use, or get cash before I go.

    What do you advise?
