    Re: Tired of Running.

Think you really need to book an appointment with Citizens Advice, so you can sit down and discuss the way forward.

Most debts are statute barred after 6 years in England/Wales (5 in Scotland) and if they haven't been to court to gain judgement, they cannot enforce using the courts. These debts should no longer be on your credit record, so if there are any like this, then you may be chased. ALWAYS ask for proof of the debt, by asking for a copy of your Consumer Credit Agreement and a copy of a statement showing the last payment made. It is not unknown for companies to put the wrong dates on credit records, so a debt could still be showing, even though the last payment date would reveal the debt as being statute barred.

Once you have registered your new address with the Credit Reference Agencies, you will start to get phone calls and letters from whoever is chasing the debts. Never speak to companies on the phone. Insist on everything being kept in writing, as that is your right.

The point of sitting down with Citizens Advice is that the process of getting rid of the debts is not going to be quick. You really just need to start the ball rolling, by getting as much information as possible. Some debts are going to be a priority to resolve and some you can avoid if they are statute barred.

Getting a mortgage is not easy even for those with a clean credit record and a fair credit record. So you might have to wait until you have resolved some of these debt issues and then speak to an independent mortgage broker to see whether there are any options available to you that you could afford.

    Tired of Running.

    Hi,

I am 32 and have been running from debt which I have slowly accrued since 1996. I have no idea how much I owe and who exactly I owe it to but I have decided that I can no longer run as there is literally nowhere to hide. I have estimated that I owe more than £40,000 that I haven't paid towards in a number of years. This problem is more real than ever as myself and my partner are looking for somewhere to move into together and I am facing the very real reality that we will be denied any mortgage due to my chequered past. I have already contacted Experian to see exactly what is attached to my previous addresses so that I have a comprehensive list of what is owed where. I suppose what I am looking for from you guys is where to go after that. Any advice would be fantastic.
