Re: Tax credits overpayment since 2005

Hi I think anyone who has ever claimed workling tax credits or child tax credits have landed up with an overpayment!!!!

We also have an over payment of WTC even though we informed HMRC of a change in our circumstances and we have offered to pay back £30 per month, it is going to take us about 20 years to repay the money but if you really fight your corner and stand your ground, tell them you can not afford to pay back the money at the rate in which they are asking, complete an income and expenditure form and let them have that, if you telephone them make sure you have all of your out goings written down as they can ask you for this information.

    Good luck

I too was asked to pay back an overpayment. I think that I was offered the chance of paying back over 3 years but when I said I could only afford £50 per month this was accepted even though I think it will take about 5 years to clear the overpayment. You will need to clarify the amount you owe and then make a monthly offer and hope they will accept it.

Please help, what are the loopholes in the system I can use to fight Inland revenue.

You can ask to pay it back over 12 months. If it is not clear how much is owed, you should write asking for clarification before agreeing to pay. If it may take time to deal with your correspondence, you should offer to make a few payments while the matter is investigated.

    Tax credits overpayment since 2005

Hi! I have recieved 5 letters today from HMRC demanding various amounts of tax overpayment since 2005 rnaging from 200 to 4000 pounds. I was also adviced that my claim was dropped , no explanation given. I am guessing is because i earn £42,000 and the eligibility for the credits is £40,000. every year for the last years my overpayment was just taken off the claims and I was hoping that how the payment back will be executed. There is no way I can pay back, I am a single parent living in London which cost a fortune and frankly I am fed up with the government doing everything to make life of people like me harder and harder... Please help, what are the loopholes in the system I can use to fight Inland revenue.
