Is it possible for you tell me the postcode for the new property or at the very least the location of where your daugther intends to live for her next year at uni?

    Cheers

as a student I am also interested in the response to this! my postcode is NR2 3TQ

We have no phoneline (that i know of) but want nippy, unlimited download and cheap broadband access.
I would also appreciate free set up, free modem and a 10 month contract, but not sure if i could get that.

    Re: Student Broadband

    Hi Caroline

OK my advice is that your daugther goes for the fastest possible - especially if sharing.

She's in luck because Be Broadband is in her location - I advise you consider Be Broadband £24 a mth for Be Unlimited (£10.50 a mth line rental).

It's 24Mb speed and unlimited download capacity plus a free wireless router.

Be aware it's a 12 mth contract though.

If you're not keen on a 12 mth contract PlusNet Option 2 is a good alternative - up to 8Mb / 8Gb download cap and free wireless router for £14.99 a mth.

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Re: Student Broadband

    Hi Gemini Sparks

OK you live 1.75km from your exchange so speed will be affected by distance. On an up to 8Mb product you'll probably get 2-4Mb speed.

Talk Talk and Virgin Media are the only two LLU/cable providers in your exchange.

If you don't have a phone line your options are:

    i) Get Virgin to install cable for £25
ii) Get BT to install a BT line for £125+

I would say your best bet is since you're a student is go for Virgin Media as they're cheaper upfront and you'll have probably moved house after 12 mths, (you will need to sign up to a 12 mth contratc though).

Their two products Broadband M (2Mb/unlimited £10 a mth, no line rental) or Broadband L (4Mb/unlimited £10 a mth, no line rental) are perhaps well suited to your needs. You might even want to splash out and go for 2 for £20 or 3 for £30 to get TV and Mobile in the mix.

If you're not keen on cable then you're going to have to pay £126 to get a BT line in - once you've done that I reccommend you go for a Pay As You Go product from someone such as PlusNet Option 2 or Namesco and you're free to leave anytime.

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Re: Student Broadband

    Hi Phillip

OK well your son lives 1km from the exchange so speeds will be good on an up to 8Mb product. Talk Talk and Virgin Media are also available but I would not go for Talk Talk as it's an 18 mth contract and might be a nightmare.

Virgin Media could be viable as it's cheap, comes with no line rental and is cheap to install.

Personally if there is already a BT phone line in there I would go with a pay as you go product from someone such as PlusNet (Option 2 £14.99 a mth, free wireless router) or Namesco - new product range to be announced in the next week which could well be perfect for your son and his mates - plus it comes with a free wireless router.

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Re: Student Broadband

    Hi Lizzie

Well you live 373 metres from your exchange so you should be able to get good speed. The only LLU provider in your exchange is Talk Talk, you can't get cable.

My advice is consider the cheapest on the market to save you the most money, OR go with an up to 8Mb / Unlimited deal.

    The cheapest:

Talk 2 International - £5.89 a mth for up to 8Mb/40GB broadband, free off peak landline calls and calls to 28 countries landlines. - the biggest problem with this deal though is the 18 mth contract which is not flexible if you're a student.

    The 8Mb/unlimited deal:

Virgin Media - Unlimited Plan 2 for £17.99 a mth could be ideal for you as it's up to 8Mb / Unlimited and no minimum contract so you only have to pay a cancellation fee to leave.

Personally I'd go with the Virgin Media deal.

    I hope this helps?

    Cheers

    Jason

    Hi Jason,

    That's great, thanks.

Have you any idea how much the cancellation charges usually are?
