I have had a look through these posts and am still not entirely sure what would be best for us, we are a 5 person student house in aberystwyth and it seems there is a lot of services we can't get, and to be honest we are all getting a bit frustrated with the whole thing can you give us some helpful advice and your top recommendation for our broadband the postcode is SY23 1LN we don't plan on being in the house for 12 months and are trying to find a compromise between good internet and affordability
thanks chris

Beaker, you say that the previous occupants have taken the phone line but of course this will not be the actual wires, just the number, and this won't affect your daughter and her housemates. The important point is that BT wil charge £125 for a new line (i.e. cable) into a property whereas they'll re-connect an existing one for far less, in fact I'm not sure they charge at all but do check. They will simply agree a new calls and line rental package with the new subscriber, issue a new number and make the existing cable into the building live again. I think there may be a 12-month minimum contract period. This is clearly an option and can be coupled with Jason's advice on broadband packages to go for. Alternatively put the postcode into the coverage checker for USB wireless modems on the websites of Vodafone, Three and T Mobile and see whether this might be an option. If coverage is OK, and as they always use their mobiles anyway, I suspect that for most students this could be the best option.
good luck. tompaul

Jason, do be careful and check your facts. The 3 Plus does not have any charge for the hardware and I don't think any of the current offerings do. I see that Three have even now dropped the £49 up front cost of the Broadband Lite product - the same dongle with just 1GB allowance at £10 per month - to zero. You only pay the monthly rental plus a £1.95 admin charge at the start. Vodafone's equivalent is the same - monthly rental only. As I have said, the arrival of these products have suddenly created a truly excellent option that is comparable on cost with the landline broadband offerings but only if you live in an area of good coverage. My son in London is getting a terrific measured speed of 2.5 Mbps. tompaul

Hi, Tompaul and Jason Thank you both very much for the advice. Interesting you should mention Freeview, as we have also "donated" our Freeview box, but they need a bit of help getting things connected, I feel. Will bring "Dad" along , next time I visit!! The shorter contract for Broadband sounds perfect. I will get checking this deal, and try to sort something out for them. Thanks again!

Thank you. Is that a 12 month contract? They are still waiting for the BT line to be connected. Would Tiscali operate from the BT exchance anyway. Why do you think Tiscali would be better than BT? Sorry for so many questions I just want to give them some good advice really! Many thanks

I'm no expert but as far as the TV is concerned I'd be looking (a) to see whether they could connect to Cable in the area and (b) whether they need a new or adjusted TV ariel (which could be the landlord's job). Sky might also solve their problems but that and Cable would both come at a cost. I'd takle the ariel as there are very very few places that cannot get a decent signal if that is correctly set up. "Laptops unable to use fully" means what? Broadband? The 3G USB dongles might work but as I already said you'll have to look at the websites for the 3 service providers that do them and check their interactive coverage maps - you can search on the postcode. Otherwise for broadband you're into phone lines and a contract with Talk Talk or whoever.

Good luck. Each of the websites - Three, Vodafone and T mobile - have interactive coverage maps where you can enter a postcode and see what kind of speeds you would get. Tom
