I have a query regarding sky and the routers that they supply.
In 2006 it became mandatory that all wifi equipment should support WPA2 security.
I recently signed up to a new contract with sky, after my old one ran out and they talked me in to staying with them, and they sent me out a router to replace the one i had been using for the last 5-6 years. The old router I had supported WPA2 and super g wireless speeds of 108mbps.
The one they have replaced it with is old. It is running old firmware from 2005-2006, does not support WPA2 and only has speeds of up to 54mbps.
I have contacted then to say that I am not happy with the replacement router they have sent out because it does not support the up to date WPA2 security and is of slower speed. They said upgrade the firmware and it will support WPA2.
It took me several weeks and several phone calls and emails and they finally sent me out a disc with the firmware upgrade on it. Only this did not work and the router still does not support WPA2.
I contacted them again to tell them this and their response was more of a 'tough luck' response, saying that the router we have is what they send out as standard and if we want the latest security we have to pay for a new wireless N router which they apparently released 2 weeks ago.
Is this allowed? I mean if WPA2 was made mandatory in 2006, should they not provide me with the right equipment to support this and not something old and slow? Should the replacement equipment not be of equivalent security level and speed to what I had before from them?
Also they said although I signed up to a new contract I am not a new customer and so they do not have to send out the new equipment that they would with a new customer who took out the same contract, even though the reason we stayed was because they said they would send out new equipment too. Is this correct or should we be treated as any new customer taking out a new contract?
