Should banks be forced to start lending to consumers and businesses?

Well, it’s been another eventful week for our wallets.

Last Monday in the Pre-Budget Report, the Government announced a £20bn "financial stimulus" that included a 2.5% cut in VAT, designed to give the economy a pre-Christmas boost.

On Wednesday, high-street stalwart Woolworths and furniture store MFI were both placed into administration, while on Friday it was announced the nation had agreed to buy almost a 58% stake in the Royal Bank of Scotland.

As we enter a critical time for retailers and consumers, do you think banks should be forced to start lending to consumers and businesses in order to help the UK economy?

Should banks be forced to start lending to consumers and businesses?

    • Not at all – They are under no obligation and it will make things much worse. (11.8%)
    • No – If they are forced to start lending, it could cause more damage to a fragile economy. (12.5%)
    • Maybe – They could do more to help but the government shouldn’t be dictating to the banks. (14.8%)
    • Yes – It’s their fault that we’re in a recession in the first place. (60.9%)
