You are right in the fact that you get less when you part exchange, but this is because the garage has to make a profit and add a warranty to that vehicle. However you need to look at the £1,800 against what private sales are achieving in your area, as you will never get forecourt price for a private sale.

I have to admin £1,190 seems a tad high for a variance. Have you valued your car at all yourself? - http://www.whatcar.com/newautotrader/valuations_search.asp is a good vauation which will show you what it is worth (allowing for mileage) for forecourt prices, private sale and part ex values.

To be honest I have never sold a car before so I dont know how long people usually sell them in I cant part ex - change as I would not really get what it is worth as they also make money on it the garage actually told me that they would give me £1,800 and sell it for £2990 so I thought i was best trying to sell it myself

How does the price you are asking compare with other 306's on the website? you could always go to undercut the competition.

I would have thought a week is not really long enough, but if you need to get rid of it sooner, you could try Ebay, a local motor auction or if the worst comes to it, sell it to a local garage, but ensure you get a decent book trade in price.

Why can't you just part ex it in against your new car?
