Whatever else you do, find a decent garage before you get the car fixed. It seems obvious to me that the mickeynick that you saw originally would not have been able to find his *** with an atlas.

If your brakes are faulty, you should not attempt to drive and knowing this will invalidate your insurance as the car is unfit for road use until it is sorted. If you are a member of the AA or similar, get it towed to a reputable garage that actually knows about cars.

    SHARK!

hi,the mechanic should not of let you drive away in a car with faulty brakes.a partial siezed caliper could of caused the vehical to loose control if you had to do an emergency stop.even worse on a wet road.if you had a bad crash the insurance company would turn around and say the car was un road worthy.would they pay out for a claim?.think carefuly about driving a car with defects.

Thanks. The caliper needs replacement for sure and will be done this Saturday. Because of the faulty caliper the pad was constantly pushed against the disc, that's why it got worn out . The mechanic said that I could use the car as the pad had enough thickness. After last night however I am seriously thinking the mechanic overestimated the pad thickness (and his own!). I hope the discs can be saved as I only had them done in the Summer. I don't know if they will be willing to change the disc under the 12 month warranty as the disc was actually fault free. Having said that, the mechanic completely misled me by saying I could drive for a few more days.

Sounds like you could have scrubbed the brake pads down to their metal backing plate, if so there has been metal to metal contact which may well have resulted in the scarring and probable overheating of the discs. There are wear indicators on the pads that are designed to squeal once the brake pads get below a certain thickness, if you have driven for a extended period once these have started to squeal then damage will most likely result.

If that is the case you could have also possibly damaged the brake caliper as well due to the overheating, or caused it to seize. This could also need either a new or reconditioned caliper, in addition to a pair of new discs and full set of pads, it's always advisable to replace pads and discs in full sets i.e. new front nearside & offside.

Scarred disc: does it need replacement?

    Hi,

While driving back from work last night, my front right brake pad (or better what was left of it!) started scarring the disc making a squealing noise. I am going to the garage this Saturday as the car was already scheduled for a caliper replacement. I am worried I have damaged the disc too. I wouldn't have driven the car hadn't the mechanic said that I had enough pad thickness to drive until Saturday. I have read somewhere that sometimes brake pads are meant to scar and squeal to warn the driver replacement is needed. Does this make any sense or will I need to fit a new disc too? I am not using the car until Saturday but my journey was 50mile long last night....

    Thanks

    K
