I am worried about getting into debt too. At the moment I have a £400 overdraft, which I'm not using (Wooo I'm clear) I am seriously thinking, well I have made up my mind that I am moving cities, need to fly the nest someday. I have been considering taking a loan out of £2000 until I find me feet. I am hoping to have a job ready for me when I move down.

You are making good money so I would go for it and treat yourself!

I'll echo SHARK's point there Jessica. Wish I'd have worried about debts spiralling at 19.... and earned 17 grand. I think with your attitude about it and your wages, I wouldn't be scared.

I think you deserve to treat yourself to a new car lol

    Thanks for your help!

I do earn £17,000 per annum which does help - I just worry that I am going to spiral out of control!

    Thanks again

Re: Scared of getting in debt!

At 19, you have a current debt of £2,100 and your income is ...?

It is good that you are concerned about debt and managing it, but don't be too scared yet. When you have a £250,000 mortgage, children, five credit cards maxed out and just been told you're unemployed - THAT's when you get scared! (Just happened to one of my neighbours).

Firstly, get rid of the credit card debt - that's usually the most expensive. You should also try to make a budget and stick with it. I recommend Microsoft Money to most people. It is easy to use, gives you a good view of your current finances and allows you to plan for the future without having to go to professionals 'unarmed'.

Make a budget for owning and driving a car and then decide if you really need it. Many people make the mistake of thinking that they need one when really, they don't. If you live in a area of good public transport, save your money and use the facilites that exist.

    Hope this helps

    Scared of getting in debt!

I am 19 years old and have a £600 overdraft, a loan of £1,000 and a credit card with £500 on it at present. Should I just get a loan and pay it all off in one - then I can use leftover money from the loan to get myself a new car?!

     Advice please!
