    Royal bank of Scotland charges

As a customer of RBS for nearly 20 years I am disgusted at them I pay a fee of £6.95 a month for a royalties subscription which has been running for around 7 years. the other day my overdraft went over its limit by a few pounds as this subscription came out making me overdrawn my fault entirely as i am usualy good with my money.

Whats disgusts me is the £28 charge for this oversight their very happy to take my royalties subscription each month but the first sign of trouble and bang they dont mess about to me they are no better than loan sharks waiting to pounce.

My account was in the black the next day and they got their £28 of flesh from me I am going to cancel my royalties account with them after reading the benefits of RBS royalties like cheap wine & holidays I have came to the conclusion these benefits are for them not me.

Enjoy your £28 RBS and please feel free to pour a glass of wine for Sir Fred it looks like the rounds on me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you spoken to your branch manager about this ? If so have they declined to waive the charge as gesture of goodwill on this occasion.

I don't want to be judgemental, this is a sh*t way to treat a long standing customer, and while it's an automated charge someone has programmed the mechanism and management have signed it off, but right or wrong the RBS charges regime is clearly stated in the terms and conditions which are posted whenever there is a change.

I assume you got notice of the charge before it was debited, in sufficient time to ask (nicely) for it to be cancelled? Its very unusual for a first offence not to be reconsidered (if you ask nicely), particularly for a paying customer.

Whether packaged accounts are a good deal generally and whether the Royalties package is a good deal in particular only you can decide. Can't be that bad if its taken 7 years to come to your conclusion.

Sorry most banks are much the same on charging rules. The same, or worse, would have happened nearly everywhere else.

You were within £7.00 of your agreed overdraft limit. Much too close for sensible account management in the current bank charging environment. Oh dear, I ended up judgemental after all.

Dont know if you noticed Confused but "Sir" Fred has been gone from RBS for quite a while now and the rest of the company (and im talking about the employees here) is paying a high price for his arrogance. I agree their charges are exhorbitant, but as Jalexa says, their charges are clearly stated, and they would have sent you a letter or tried to call you at least before the charge occurred.

I knew Sir Fred had gone! Although RBS is still paying him! sadly you and your fellow employees may bare the brunt of RBS failings and i do feel sorry for you all.

Today I received a email today after complaining via the feedback form online as i tried to contact the local branch by phone at least 4 times with no reply? hopefully they may view it in a diffirent light

I have never stated RBS were to blame for my oversight its just the fact after all these years with RBS they may have used a human to review my case rather than a computer generated overdrawn default system?

I will comment on their reply if any! Thank you for your comments

I may be slightly unsympathetic but I entirely agree with your examples of poor bank service. If making a computer generated charge costs £28, a customers wasted time in making 4 failed calls must be at least worth that as a penalty on the bank.

My experience is that RBS is OK in answering branch phone calls, actually quite good, but hopeless at sending branch letters. I've evidence of being lied to about that, but that's another matter.

Hit them as hard as you can on their poor customer service.

Re: Royal bank of Scotland charges

Thank you for your comments to date still waiting on RBS contacting me after receiving an email stating my complaint has been passed on to my local branch.

This matter did throw up another issue I had with RBS nearly four years ago when i applied for a car loan they asked for proof of earning plus utility bills even though i was a long term customer i sent these on and never heard back from them after two weeks of waiting for a reply i then went to the bank of scotland asking them for a car loan after quick checks on my standing the loan with them was approved same day.

Around six months later i received a letter from RBS enclosed was the utilty bills they requested they apologized for the delay in sending these back i was gobsmacked!!!! ( I still have the letter ) they lost my business to bank of scotland through bad customer service..

You would think after that i would have learned a lesson and moved banks I must have been so be stupit!! I have now seen an offer from the bank of scotland offering me £5 a month to bank with them which i will take up.

Thank you all for listening to my rants and for your helpful comments
