Removing a default from my credit report

    Hi,

I'm wondering if you can help me with this query.

I received a default on my report for the following reason.

    - I opened a store card to save 20% on some purchases (what a regret now!)

    - I then waited for the bill to pay off the outstanding amount before cutting up the card, the bill never came (or if it did it never got to me, I lived in a shared house, and it didn't help my surname wasn't incorrectly!). This was Dec 04.

    - As I never received the bill, I (stupidly), forgot about the card. I then moved to our new house in June 05

    - I was then contacted in Jan 07 (yes 2007!), by Lowell debt collections, advising me of the outstanding debt. this was the first I heard about it. I paid the £70 there an then and was advised this would be clear and it would not affect my credit report/score.

    - Earlier this year I decided to take out a new credit card, 0% for 12 months, so could pay for all of my wedding costs and manage the expenditure more effectively (moving money from saving when needing to). I was refused the card and therefore decided to check my credit report again. This is when i noticed the default was still on the report!

    - I now want to approach to the debt collection company or even the original store card company (who I subsquently actually took out another card with in 2006, again to save on the day, this is currently paid up, but still active). How do I approach them to ask for all comminucation that they have sent to me, dates etc. I want to be able to prove to them that I was not entirely at fault and hopefully have the default removed. My mortgage is up renewal early next year and want to have this resolved.

Other than this my credit report is flawless, all credit card paid on time and my only debt is our mortgage.

I am currently in a senior role with my employers and have worked here fo 6 years.

Any advise would be most welcome

    Thanks in advance

    Paul

Re: Removing a default from my credit report

Hi --- You need to write to the store card company that placed the default, asking for their written permission and agreement to having the default removed early from your credit reference files.

If you provide them with the reference number and date / amount and explain that this problem was down to a series of misunderstandings at the time outlining your above post, also offering to pay the small admin costs if necessary in supplying the default removal agreement letter, then hopefully you can then send copies of this letter onto the credit agencies, this is the only way you will get the default removed early.

I enclose a few details from UK Insolvency with the credit agency addresses and a few tips.
