I relocated 10 years ago with a government department - I received a lump sum (carpets and curtains - about £3k) plus all my removal costs were paid - plus travelling expenses (for you - pretty large I imagine) hotel costs were available - plus legal costs - plus time off to search for a property (all in all about £10k)

Depends on your company - but I would push for all the above at least......plus I would look for excess mortgage costs (if you are paying more in Devon - why should you have to pay a penny to help your employers - KEEP ALL RECEIPTS (no matter how small)

spoke to my manager today about the relocation package. i said i didnt think the package was that good. he told me that further down the line when he gets numbers of employees wanting to relocate ( and i think i am the only one willing to) he will look at package again. i think he knows am the only one wanting to but cant say it because he doesnt want everyone changing there minds.

he told me not to be put off by offer and to come back to the table at the right time to talk about package. i know he is really keen for me to relocate but has to be fair at this point to everyone.

what should i come back to table with when the time is right?.

The first £8,000 of expenses paid for by your employer are tax and NI free and after that you'll get taxed on them. See

for a summary of what is and isn't included in the £8,000. As you'll see interest on a bridging loan to allow you to redeem the mortgage on your existing place would be OK but interest free loans to fund deposits wouldn't be. So if they did that then you'd end up paying tax on a notional figure for the interest.

Easiest way to work out whether it will work for you in Devon is to rent (and to ask your employers to pay for 6 months or so). Rent is a normal part of relocation packages because even if you sell your old house and then buy another one in the new location it can take 6 months or so to sort the sale out and find a new place. Having gone through a reloaction I wouldn't advise buying something in a new area until you've been there for at least 3 months as you don't get a feel for the nice areas until you've actually lived there.

could they offer a good interest free loan for a move? dont know what tax problems this would bring on??.

I didn't think that they saw themselves as "down south" in Devon but you should certainly visit the area to dispell any misconceptions.

Normally relocation packages will help you to get a property that is similar to where you are at the moment so they might pay or lend money to pay for estate agent and solicitor fees as well any difference between the price of what you are selling and what you are buying. Removal costs, costs of buying out phone/cable/etc contracts are often expected. I doubt that you'll get financial assistance with a plan involving contingencies for "incase it doesn't work out" though.

If you have children, you should consider the implications for schools and so on. It would be best for their education if any move took place during the summer holidays so there could be extra costs if you were to move now and they were to move in a couple of months.

Other family ties should also be considered including, perhaps, the costs of visiting relatives. Costs such as this are hard to put a figure on though so it may be easier to just ask for a higher salary rather than the cost of a journey at Christmas that may or may not take place.

my company is relocating from south of scotland to devon. they are looking into what they can offer staff to relocate the now. i own a house(but have a mortgage on it) but dont want to sell it incase it doesnt work out for me down south. what sort of things should i ask for in this relocation package?

i would need to raise a deposit for a new property so i was wondering if i could recieve an company interest free loan for a set amount. would there be any tax problems with this?

other thing i should be asking for?
