Thanks for the tips, I've been reading up in these forums already. I think it was one of your posts actually. Glasses was done yesterday and I've got about 3-4 private sales examples on standby.

    I'm ready for them ;-)

In the meantime, the car concerned is a 5dr VW Polo, '98 reg, 55,000 on the clock. I'll get back when the offer comes in.

Never accept the first offer, they will deliberately offer you a low amount. You should check glasses guide online, who charge I think £3.50 to obtain a valuation for you to print out. Insurers tend to use glasses guide. Also check for details of cars of the same model, age and millege advertised for sale. Then after they have made their first offer, if is not enough, go back to them with the information to support a higher value. It can take abit of negotiation to get the true value of the vehicle paid out.

If it makes you feel any better, the other party would still have to pay your claim even if you were un insured, the way the law works if they are liable they are liable irrespective of whether your car is registered in your partners name.

If you need any advice on getting the best settlement for a write off from them then post up here and we can give you some pointers

Re: Registered keeper error on policy

The fact the car is registered in your partner's name should not normally present a problem especially if you live together (It would be worth informing your own Insurers though so they are aware)

As the other party are paying the claim the registered keeper does not really matter, they may make payment to your partner, if they propose to do this and it presents a problem then a letter from your partner confirming it is ok for payment to be made to you will often be sufficient for them to pay you

I think you are worrying for no reason. If the 3rd party was responsible they will pay out when they receive the details. If they ask, just advise that the vehicle is jointly owned between yourself and your partner, with equal usage. I don't think they will be that bothered, as long as you were a named driver on your Insurance policy.

You should however, correct the details on your own Insurance, to make sure the Insurance and V5 details are matching. If you change the details, this may cause an adjustment in premium and they may charge an admin fee.

    Registered keeper error on policy

I was recently involved in a car accident where I was stationary in traffic and hit from behind. The other side appear to have acepted liability and I was contacted by their insurer trying to resolve payment. I have put them off for a bit. The potential problem arises where our insurance policy shows the registered keeper as my partner. The policy is in her name but on the V5 I am shown as the registered keeper. Can anyone tell me what effect this will have on the claim.
