    Re: R T A Insurance

    For future info.

RTA stands for Road Traffic Act. The minimum insurance it used to be legal to have, I don't know if it still applies, but it probably doesn't. Basically it covered you in case you killed or injured someone, full stop. No other cover, no 3rd party vehicles, no fire & theft, nothing.

Totally insane if you wanted to take a car on the road, but there you go.

P.S. This was a very informative thread! Cheers.

    Re: R T A Insurance

Can you help with some more information.

Having bought an old car with a cracking number plate on to transfer onto my own car. I am now hearing whispers that l cannot transfer the mark unless l have owned the donor vehicle for six months or more - can anyone confirm this?

If that is the case then although l have the donor vehicle insured and off-road, with the intention to SORN it upon receipt of new log book, the MOT runs out in Feb 2008 - so will l need to get a new MOT etc before l can apply to transfer the number?

    Would appreciate any information

    Cheers

    Re: R T A Insurance

you might find tpft is better than some tpo and rta policys,a lot of tpft policys can actually work out cheaper as more and more companys are phasing out tpo cover....

Hi & Welcome --- Perhaps you may take off your CAPITAL lock when posting, it's considered shouting and is bad forum etiquette... Thanks.

You could consider the cheapest third party (is that what you meant by RTA= road traffic accident ? ) temporary cover on the old car, in order to transport your number plate across, you can get temporary cover for the short period you need it from here if you like >  http://tempcover.com/default.aspx?src=google  for long enough to transfer the number once you've got the temp cover note then, you need to do the following below :

When you wish to transfer your registration mark, you will need to fill out a V317 form and either take or send your application to your local vehicle office along with the following documents (for each vehicle):

    • V5C Registration documents (or completed new keeper’s supplements with V62 form)

    • MOT certificate(s) (if applicable, i.e. more than 3 years since first registration)

    • Photo copies of Valid tax discs (or V10 form(s) along with certificate(s) of motor insurance and appropriate payment for new tax disc(s).

    • Cheque for £80 made payable to the department of transport.

The Donor vehicle (the one that the registration is coming off) will receive an age related registration mark.
