    Hi

Would I be able to transfer a balance from a card in my name to a card in my wife's name? Or do balance transfers have to be to and from a card registered to the same person?

    Thanks in advance

    Yes, you can.

But be aware that the person is legally responsible for that person's debt without any comeback. Eg. if I transferred my long-time-lover's debt onto my card and then she left me for another credit card owner there is no legal I could make her repay the debt transferred to me!

Re: Quick Question Re: Balance Transfers

    Hi,

I've transferred my partners balance onto my cards before (obviously 0% interest) I've done this with Halifax, Alliance Leicester, Sony, Nationwide so you shouldn't have a problem.

Re: Quick Question Re: Balance Transfers

    Hi drumster,

The bank I work for (Lloyds TSB) allows you to transfer any balance on to your credit card that you wish to. If it is someone elses balance, then so long as you give consent to bring that balance over on to your credit card, they will do so.

So to answer your original question, the answer is yes, so long as your wife calls the bank and passes the required security questions, and then gives her consent to bring your balance on to her credit card.

I don't know if the same policy applies to every other bank, but I would assume so. If you're in doubt, a quick call to the customer services department will soon answer your question.

    Hope this information is helpful.

Re: Quick Question Re: Balance Transfers

On that basis, over a year or so on this Forum I have never seen this subject discussed so that may be an indicator that it's a no no perhaps because of the difference in circumstances with each customer being 'unique'. You could look at a few of the 'details' on the CC listed on the CC calculator on this site.

Re: Quick Question Re: Balance Transfers

Was thinking of doing that this evening afterwork, in the meantime was just wondering if there was an indusrty wide rule of thumb for such practices, or whether it's donw to the lender's discretion.

    Thanks for the response.

Why not phone the card company and ask them, anonymously if necessary?
