jillybean:my father is the registered keeper of the car my mother is the primary driver of, it is also insured in his name but she is a named driver on the policy.  Is this legal or does she need her own insurance.

    Hi jillybean,

All other comments are correct and true; but I would say that between 'Spouse'; the registered keeper/owner/driver of the vehicle is not really a big issue. You should only worry if the risk for one person (the named) is higher than the main as the rates will be muddled, providing an incorrect premium. This is generally when the insurer feels peeved!

You cant insure one car twice with 2 policies at the same time. All insurance companies differ with their policies and criteria. You need to check this out with a simple call to your insurer.

    Re: Primary drivers

Technically, the person who uses the vehicle the most should have the insurance policy and the person who uses it occasionally should be the 'named' party. Between husband and wife, where there is one vehicle only, this is somewhat academic as someone is going to have to 'take the lead' so to speak, but as a general rule of thumb, this is the way to view it.

Remember - if you are even in doubt - ask your insurer.

    SHARK!
