    Pre Payment Meter

Having just moved into my first house, I find I have a Electric Pre Payment meter. Call Brritish Gas to set up account and have key sent out in my name.( I am currently using the previous owners key) This was in December. Got home the other night and had not electricity left so added £20, this lasted 3 days!!!!! I live in a 1 bedroom flat and at the moment I have no heating (broke down the day we moved in!) My husband and I both work during the week and there is only the fridge/freezer on during the day. Called Energy Watch for some advice and they were concerned that because I have never received a Key in my own name I may be paying debts in the previous owners name. Next thing BG called me and said another key would be sent out, this is now the 4th request and they arranged a call back to do a full meter reading in the evening. This was over a week ago now. I have called everynight to no avail. Put on hold constantly and cut off. Looking for some advise. Can I change energy suppliers at this stage and who do you recommend. I tried comparison but because I do not know my correct usage this has proved difficult. Would also like to move away from Pre Payment and have MDD. Help

I only use TV, cooker, 1 lamp (energy saving light bulb) ,cooker, shower and 1 portable oil heater that is only switched on when we arrive home from work.

    Re: Pre Payment Meter

Pre payment meters are dearer overall. You can have a normal meter put in for free usually..but check first.Probably whoever you go to the prepayment will be dearer.

    Re: Pre Payment Meter

i had a pre-payment meter with them and decided it was getting too expensive, i called them to take it out. I never received a bill for the next quarter-called them several times, kept being told someone would call me back but never did. I told them i wasnt getting bills and if they wanted to continue to give me free electricity that was fine. Eventually i managed to speak to someone who tried to help. They told me they would look into it and call me back. About a week later they did call to say they gave my meter to someone else, because the other customer had been paying it they thought it was me as it was still in my name! They eventually told me i would have to pay almost three hundred pound for my bill!!!!!!!!!!!

I told them i wasnt happy as it was their fault and was told they would give me a reduction. Several phone calls to them later cos i still didnt receive my bill- i was told i would have to pay the full amount. When i said i was told i would get a reduction they told me i was given wrong info. I said it was too close to xmas and couldnt afford that. They said they would accept £40 per month until it was paid and sent me a card to pay it at the post office. I was doing this until they sent me my next quarter bill, it was rediculous also and still owed the near same amount on my previous amount. They told me it was cos i used my washing machine too much! They have now recently put up my monthly payment to £70!!!!

I am trying to pay it off, then i will definately change suppliers - you should do the same!
