    Policies for couples

    Hi

    My son is travelling with his girlfriend to Spain-they do not live together so believe they cannot have a 'couple' policy-is is best for them to go on the same policy as a 'group' rather than individual policies as in case of cancellation if 1 of them can't travel an insurer may deem that as tey are not related/live together then the other 1 can be reasonably expected to continue with the trip.

    Thanks

    Re: Policies for couples

    Hi

    If they do not live together as a couple I would suggest separate policies. The trouble with group type policies is that you have one main policyholder, the person that the arranges the policy and others that are noted as also Insured in the group. In this situation you are relying on the person arranging the policy to declare all relevant information e.g. medical problems. This assumes the person arranging knows all information or can ask candid details from all within group. Arranging separate policies is therefore best as it up to the individual to declare relevant information and read policy documents. Also you get separate policy documents, rather than just have one policy document for group. Price wise I doubt there is much difference between individual and group policies anyway.

    This a typical wording which applies to cancellation

    This cover applies when you have to cancel a journey because of the death or serious injury or
    illness of:
    • you;
    • a companion your travel depends on;
    • a member of your immediate family; or
    • a person abroad whose home you are intending to stay in.

    I doubt therefore that having a group policy makes the cancellation cover better, than an individual policy as I don't believe it makes any difference.

    Re: Policies for couples

    Well, because they are not married, and therefore there will be a chaperone, then I would have thought group insurance would make perfect sense.

    Sorry was there a question?

    Re: Policies for couples

    Hi

    Whilst your son and his girlfriend cannot apply for a policy as a couple they should be able to go on the same policy as individuals. If they do go on a single policy then the person making the booking would be taking responsibility for agreeing to the terms of the policy as advised by huckster in an earlier post.

    As there is no financial benefit of going on the same insurance they could take separate policies so that they both go through the relevant sales process. Even if they are covered individually through different insurance companies there should not a problem if they both have to cancel as most policies will cover cancellation due a 'travelling companion' not being able to travel. Therefore the fact that they are not related or living together should not affect the cover provided.

    If either of them have medical conditions then it is sensible to be insured on the same policy.

    Hope this helps.
