Please help! All these broadband options are making my head spin!

    Hi there

I've been reading through user reviews and other people's posts / questions so thought I may as well ask one myself since I am having no luck in deciding which broadband deal is right for us! It's so confusing!

so, we have just moved to a rented property and will likely only be there for 6 months so first off I need to make sure any deal I get is transferable to another place / phone line - I gather most of them are but if someone knows for sure that'd be great. Also, I can't decide whether to just go with BT or Sky for a combined package or one of the smaller providers who have better customer services - we have a BT line so no point getting a package which includes that but I am tempted by Sky's offer of £26 for TV (especially since I can't get Channel 5 at our new place so maybe Sky would mean better TV reception?), calls (cheap international calls are a nice extra though not crutial) and broadband but worried that you have to use their router (we already have a router) and also the customer services issues people mentioned put me off! We live in a village outside Guildford and apparently our fastest connection speed is only about 2MB anyway so that doesn't really matter so much I guess. As for BT, the experience I had with getting our phone line puts me off dealing with them though they have some good deals and I guess if it works it's fine. We had tiscali at our other place (someone else's account) and that was OK, no real complaints from me but I see from other people they can be a nightmare too! So what's a girl to do?! Also, we don't want to have to wait 3 weeks before we get service (what is it with these companies taking weeks to give you service?!). I was all set to sign up with one today when I came into work but then I started looking again and I just don't know what to do so am hoping someone can help us choose the right option for us.

    Big thanks in advance!

    Spookeychick :-)

Hi Michael. I'm cheating, I know, but I tried to post a message to Rob about Broadband and ended up in the Mobile phone section (so I cheekily also stuck on a question about mobiles!!). I've not had a response so conclude it's in the wrong place to the wrong person - maybe!!??

Like Spookeychick, the options out there are making my head-spin. Some seem brilliant, until you try getting through to them then you realise that if it's so difficult getting through to sales you've probably got no chance with technical help.

I don't want a package - just fast, reliable broadband, unlimited downloads as I don't know how much I need. With AOL now, paying £24.99. Don't want to pay more as I never download films. Postcode: SS16. Can you help me too please?

    Thank you

Re: Please help! All these broadband options are making my head spin!

    Hello Spookeychick,

I believe based on your line speed of 1Mbps on an upto 8Meg product and 0.5Mbps on an upto 2Meg you would be best speaking to Sky.

Certain providers in your area may not accept an application from you due to the low line speed. The Sky service would be £16 a month and would provide you with Sky TV, Evening and weekend calls and a free upto 2Meg service that should do the job.

I think this package would be your best bet.

    Kind Regards,

    Michael.

Re: Please help! All these broadband options are making my head spin!

By the way, I thought that SKY may be the best one for me at one stage as I am a subscriber and their rates seemed so good. First time I called them I was passed around to 4 different depts then cut off. Tried twice more. 2nd time got through to someone who took some details then cut off again. 3rd time I was on the phone for 30 mins and I hung up in the end. hence my remark about if it's this difficult getting through to sales there's no encouragement that I will get through to technical help without a problem.
