A lot has been said about Pipex on this site so one thing it may be worth doing is putting PIPEX into the search facility at the top of this page.

Did you sign up to Pipex Internet or Pipex Homecall? If you're unsure, run a traceroute to Google and post the results here.

As for the 12 month "lock-in", any ISP that absorbs initial connection and modem costs etc will tie the customer to a lengthy contact. It's much better to buy your own connection equipment, pay the connection fee up front and choose a reliable ISP with a one month contract.

Avoid Pipex homecall like the plague. First they promise you up to 8 Meg. This is a top speed which they never achieve. I constantly look at their bandwidth speed tops is 2.2 meg and because they always crawl along or are not there when bandwidth demand increases. I reckon average speed approached close to dialup i.e 56K. You see old Hoff has attracted more customers than the old bandwith can deal with so expect the sort of service that willl have you adding a counter to your google page with days left to end your minimum term. in my case end of October, If you want to experience new lows and slows then signup. just dont expect much. Their fair use policy could be renamed more honestly broadband rationing as thats what it is. Odly enough ,At work I have pipex extreme which is ultra reliable thats why I tried them at home but pipex homecall is rubbish and if you want to tell them that you will have to do so on an 0870 number so you quickly learn that incompetence pays.I am surprised pipex a once proud company will lend its name to such muck.

Be aware that Pipex Homecall utilses the crippled Tiscali network rather than the almost crippled Pipex network. ;-]]

However, things may soon change if Tiscalis interest in the Pipex group culminates in a takeover.

Thanks - I was not aware it was the Tiscali network but I did note that if you use the site what's my Ip address. It identifyed the server location on Pipex homecall ( the rubbish one) as a completely different one to the pipex business ( pipex extreme) which is in oxford from recollection. If I had known I was really signing up to tiscali I think I would have went with someone else. I had those years ago for a dial up connection which was about as reliable as my current broadband. Still roll on the end of October. This seems to be part of the problem with telecoms they buy each other out so quick that you never can really know who you are signing up with.

It seems that you have signed up to, or have perhaps been slammed by the much hated Pipex Homecall. Many Pipex Internet customers were contacted by Pipex Homecall reps posing as Pipex Internet reps and offered "free" upgrades etc. What they weren't told was accepting these upgrades meant a lengthy and punitive contract and a switch to the Tiscali network.
However you came to be in their grasp, the Tiscali FUP etc applies to you rather than the Pipex Internet FUP (Not that there's much difference these days!) but billing etc is processed via the Pipex Group.
You have the worst of both worlds as the Pipex accounts and tracking system malfunctioned over a year ago while a new system was introduced live and no backups were made. The whole system is clearly still in meltdown with some customers not being billed or being incorrectly billed and ex customers of years ago being chased for non existent debts by collection agencies.

As you are, for want of a better phrase, a virtual Tiscali customer, you should view the horrors that comprise the service section of the Tiscali forums . In viewing this, remember that complaints that are too critical or too constant are removed so it all looks a lot better than it really is.

I forgot to add that if you haven't done so already, change your payment method to direct debit. At least this gives you a modicum of control over your financial dealings with this dreadful company.

I have had almost 12 months of problems with Pipex.  I found the only way to get anyone to call you back was to cancel my direct debit.  Unfortunately my bills have still not been sorted. I signed up for the broadband and phone calls package, but it turns out my phone calls were still going through BT for 3 months after they had told me my phone calls had been transferred.  Believing them to be included with my package and being out of work I spent hours and hours on the phone only to receive a whopping bill from BT and Pipex charging me £14.99 per month for the privilege of having broadband on it's own.  I have argued that as I signed up for a package I should only pay the £6.50 broadband bit.  Anyway I am still waiting for things to be sorted and have not yet paid a penny.  They also tried to take an unspecified amount of money from my bank which contravenes the direct debit statement.

They are an abysmal company and I wish I'd stuck with my old dial up which was just as quick and worked out cheaper.

Yes sounds like old Hoff has worked his magic again - the worst thing I find about pipex homecall broadband service  at moment is the constant need to reboot your router. I regularly have to login to my netgear router into diagnostics and reboot. But this seems to be characteristic of the homecall (tiscali really) service.fortunately I have been spared the billing errors you experienced but the broadband service is well past its prime like old hoff. still acording to my countdown I have on google only 120 left to dump them.

i was with pipex for 24months waited 6months for mac code (transfered to talk talk another mistake ) cancelled my account with pipex yet they still took payments from my account via card payments contacted my bank who told me to  change my card number ( had to say i lost it ) yet they still took payments again contacted bank who told me i have to fill in a form to give pipex 30days notice yet they still took payments one for £73. went ballistic with the bank threatened to change banks they then monitored my account yet still pipex attempted to take money even tho i got my money refunded i would stay well clear of pipex and more importantly agreeing to card payment methods , nb sorry forgot to mention i wasnt under contract with pipex

Do not quite understand this. If you were paying by Direct Debit you only have to give the bank written notice to stop payments so presume, as you mention card payment, that you had elected to pay via a credit card  Also how were you '' not under contract with Pipex ' ? I am also having trouble with them and they state that stopping the Direct Debit will be viewed as deliberate failure to pay. It is ! See my comments.
