I live in Spain and i still use my UK phone to text Uk and South Africa from Spain. It is actually cheaper to use my UK mobile for text messages while I am Spain than it is to use my Spanish contract phone in Spain. So compared to Spain the UK rates are much lower. It costs me 40p to send a text overseas from my Spanish vodafone mobile and only 25p with Virgin and i have heard that with O2 its even cheaper.

I went to Spain to watch the Spanish GP and phoned home almost every night it cost me £1 a minute yet for me to phone Spain from the UK using my mobile was 20p a minute according to the leaflet from my service provider but the £1 a minute was cheap compared to my brother-in-law who paid £1.80 a minute to phone a land line in the UK . My point been that if it can cost only 20p a minute to phone from the UK then why doesn't it cost the same in reverse?.

The EU Telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding has launched an EU website publicising the "unjustifiable" charges travellers face when making and receiving calls on their mobile phones in other European countries. Following this new laws are being designed to force mobile phone companies to cut their roaming charges, to levels close to x-network calls. Also, some of the major UK operators have recently announced major price cuts in there roaming charges probably in an attemt to avoid a future regulation changes/reviews. I think we need to watch this space. DK.
