Glad you're sorted with a new bank account.

Don't forget, if you've not managed to have the charges refunded, prepare the necessary paperwork and go after 'em.

Re: overdraft bomb - Eargent advice needed.

Hi Prodigy, Sorry I am not an expert regarding overdraft charges. I just know my son had made a mistake on one occasion with Alliance and Leicester and they charged him a lot of money. I suggested he ring up and explain it was an oversight and that he had run his account for some time without problem.... blah blah and they refunded the charges after much pushing by my son and speaking to a supervisor at a call centre.

My account with Abbey did have a problem on another occasion. My company had a problem with the bureau processing the payroll and my salary arrived 2 days late. I knew on the day it was going to be late, I rang Abbey and sorted out an overdraft facility to be available that day and only paid a few pence interest. I always think it is worth ringing and asking for the charges to be refunded. Especially if the account is normally run without problem. In any event it is worth putting in place an overdraft facility, as long as you don't pay for it, just in case. Sorry I can't be any more help. I am not an expert, just many years of running bank accounts. Kevin

kev2006n:I agree the charges seem extraordinary. I think if this is the first time and you point it out to the bank they will refund the amount if you push them hard. However, going to another bank will not sort the problem You might feel better but the same problem could happen again. Why not arrange with your bank to have an overdraft facility. I am with Abbey and have an overdraft facility, it cost me nothing normally. On the 2 occasons when it has been used, interest charges amounted to less than £1. I am not an expert. Kevin

As I can tell you are an expert regarding overdraft charges I thought you might be able to help me. I have a savings account with HSBC. Recently without being aware I went on a overdraft of 100 pound on my account and soon as I realised I paid in 150 pounds in my account so the time I was on overdraft was for about 4 days. But now I can see there is an outstanding 25 pound to be charged to my account on the 23rd of October. Is there anything I can do to not pay this charge. I thought it might be useful to if I mention that i went into overdraft once before but they didn't charge me for that as I paid in immediately.
Thanks in advance for your time.

These charges are unfair and unreasonable.  Try to get them refunded to your account.  And the Banks wonder why they have become unpopular!!!

If you fail, prepare the necessary letter to re-claim your bank charges and submit it to your Bank.  If you are forced to take this route, you may have to wait some time before you have them refunded as all refunds are now on hold pending the outcome of the Court case.  However, I'm sure the Courts will find the charges that the Banks have imposed on the general public to be wrong and will force them to issue refunds.  Better late than never!  Good luck.

    Hello ,

Thanks for sharing your experiences and replying to my questions . It seems you r charged even more than I am ,all that fuss for £6 is just pathetics - I am definitly going to continue writing to my bank about them "overcharging " for small issues .Actually I might split my direct debits in other account , so I can be sure this does'nt happen next time .

Don't forget to be extra careful about DD next time -

    Thank you. bye.

Re: overdraft bomb - Eargent advice needed.

    Hello,

I am sorry to hear of your situation, the same thing happened to me this week, I basically forgot about a new diret debit that was due out this monday the 15th, fortunately or so i thought i checked online on sat the 13th saw it was due and immediately transferred some funds form another acc with same bank. On monday the 15th I checked again, all was well the direct debit had been paid and i still had money in my acc. On tuesday the 16th i checked balance only to find i hd been charged £38 and the direct debit returned unpaid even though the money was in my acc from the sat.

After arguing with my bank i was told that for a d/d to be paid  the funds have to be in your acc one working day beofre the payment is due (in my case the Friday 12th) so in addition to the £38 i am being charged another £28 for going overdrawn.

If they had paid my dd i would have gone 6 pounds overdrawn and only had to pay the  £28 fee. Instead I have been charged nearly 70 quid for going £6 overdrawn. I pointed out that they have done this because it makes them more money and is completely unjustified. I am still awaiting a response form head office.

Tomorrow I have an appt at a rival bank to switch accounts.

Your charges will be similar to mine, one for the item being unpaid and one for going overdrawn. Make a complaint in writing and lodge a claim to claim it back (hopefully the test case will rule in customers favour)  which they will have to put on file pending the outcome.

overdraft bomb - Eargent advice needed.

    hello there,

I have an current account with the royal bank of scotland & have a few direct debits going out on 1st of every month .

This month (oct-)  unfortunatly I was short of £80 , anyway direct debit went out on 1st .I realised and added some fund on 2nd of oct - just the next day - In the first week of this month I received bank statement and a little note saying

"The service charge to be deduced from account number 0000  on 19 oct is-  £28 ."

fine I was expecting it but after few days I received other letter saying

"As the borrowing charges on your account has recently been greater than the limit it is important you know that a paid referral charge of £30 has accured on your account & will be applied on the 6th business day of next month ."( dated 3rd oct )

now the question is I dont have any overdraft fecility at all , so how can they charge me for going overdrawn ?? Besides if the second letter is dated 3rd oct .... I already had the money in by 2nd .....

I went to my local branch and asked , she said both the charges are correct and if u disagree , give it in writing , it is nothing to do with me .

Please can someone help me explain what the charges are for and paying £58 for £80 overdrawn for a day is not making any sense -Are they legally allowd to do so ??

Please advice me as soon as possible.

    THANK YOU.
