Dear Laura
The other day I went to a new car dealer to test drive a car. I was very unimpressed with the salesman who was a stereotypical "used car salesman". He wanted me to sign a disclaimer when I returned the car to absolve them if I ran a TL etc. I said where's my copy? To which he he looked slightly stunned but gave me one. When I returned (not a bedtime story) I asked him various questions which he gave foolish answers to and I pressed him and he began to sweat a bit, look uncomfortable and I knew what he was thinking "Is this guy from HQ etc". Anyway I got up to leave and curtly asked him to sign and time and date my copy and I walked out.
Now remember he'd clearly never given a customer a copy and didn't care - he just wanted to protect himself.
POINT
He was so confused he didn't ask me to sign his original which was the point of the exercise.
SUGGESTION
If you are comfortable presenting yourself in your best interests and adapting to the salesman and maybe play them at their own game say showing interest in other products or whatever makes sense and give the return an apparent low priority maybe they will only glance at the phone. Oh yes, no I'm not a con man.
