Re: opening a bank a/c with bad credit

    :) No problem.

To be honest, I'm not sure.

It takes a different amount of time with each account that I have. 7 days is about the longest it takes.

If you need this same day, you'd need to check who could do it quickest as there are some accounts that can do this for you (Lloyds can I think), but I'm not sure if you'd be eligible (a credit account).

You might be able to find this out online from the various bank websites offering accounts. Some might even offer you money for opening an account, some if you are referred by another customer.

Re: opening a bank a/c with bad credit

I have an account with the abbey which was / is a current account, which last year I asked them to convert the card to an electron card so that I could pay for Ryanair flights without paying a massive booking fee (as I visit family in Ireland).

Simple bank accounts and the electron card which only offer debit and not credit services (so not a 'current account') are aimed at people with bad credit or difficulty, and so you should be able to get this account.

You can use an electron card online, and do electronic transfers (and online banking) with the account that I have. There are some places that won't accept an electron card, but this should be infrequent.

There are no charges from the Abbey for using the card, but you still might be charged at some ATMs (that charge everybody)

You might be able to apply online, but you would still have to prove your identity and address at a branch, so it might be worth going in anyway and make an appointment to see someone.

Good Luck with it, and the sooner you are away from the rip off money shop the better!

    Sparky

Re: opening a bank a/c with bad credit

Thankyou for the advice .ill look into that .The card i have just now is the mastercard titanium debit issued from the money shop but i have had problems with it once or twice where i have been for petrol and the card was declined even tho i no for a fact there is mony in it .On one occasion i phoned from the garrage and let the owner speak to mastercard. it turned out the money had been paid to the garage although it had not been credited to the garages account figure that out i cant !! . Another gripe i have with it if i have to for any reason go to a cash machine it takes off two pounds for every ten i take .I know its getting off the original post but just wondered if anyone else has had the same problem

    Regards Brian

    AngelaK:

To add to AngelaK's suggestions, the Co-op is an Electron card which works in stores and Link ATMs. The Lloyds card is a Visa branded debit card which works in stores but NOT Link ATM's (only Lloyds ATMs), the HSBC card is fairly useless, NOT working in stores or ANY ATM except HSBC.

Re: opening a bank a/c with bad credit

    That's ok.

Just make sure you ask for the basic bank account at whichever bank you try - all banks should have a version (eg Co-op Cashminder, Lloyds Cash Account, Barclays Cash Card Account or HSBC Basic Bank Account)

Re: opening a bank a/c with bad credit

    Hi Brian

You should be able to open a basic account at most banks, especially as the bankruptcy would have fallen off your credit report in the meantime

Try Co-op, I've heard that they are very good for people with bad credit

Also, make sure you are on the electoral role, as this will help to improve your credit score

    Good luck!
