annasdarksecret: be careful very careful  china, india,

    Hi

In answer to your recent post, yes I have been a victim and the bank and police are currently investigating.  I have managed to obtain a delivery address for one particular transaction but that was only today so I will be in touch with bank tomorrow.

With regard to putting off internet shopping, the answer would have to be a definite yes.

    Regards

    Hi Defiant

Thanks for the advice - checking to see if a retailer is reliable beforehand is a good option and as Defiant says you can use something like Google to look into this quite easily.

    Cheers

Jason Lloyd:Bearing in mind the recent survey which came out and said that 1 in 10 of UK online users have been subject of some form of internet fraud via online shopping, is there anyone out there who has been a victim of this? What do people think generally about the security of online shopping? Would the threat be enough to stop you shopping online? What measures would you like to see implemented to reduce online fraud? Cheers Jason

I bought something from an online outfit a few years back but was prepared for it because I work in I.T. The item was only £35 but they didn’t send me it so I got in touch with Barclaycard and they took over. They phoned me back the next day and said the outfit had given me the money back so I had to remind Barclaycard they’d know this because I paid via them (the outfit trying it on) LOL. Anyway to cut a long story short I had the money put back on my credit card a week later. So my advance is use a credit card when shopping online if possible. If your going to spend a large amount of money always do a Google of the company first as that can help to find out if the company has a bad record

    Hi Backfoot

Glad to hear the shower part fits.

SYHSYK - works on the principle of tackling cardholder not present fraud by asking someone to tell a retailer a pin number (not the pin for use in cash machines) to make online purchases - this is combined with the credt card itself.

I've seen really clever systems where it's a random pin number generator so it changes all the time thus preventing other people making a purchase.

    Cheers

    Re: Online fraud

''something you have, something you know''.......how does that work?

I like the spam idea a lot.I used to suffer from it a lot but not so much on my new computer.btw I just got the shower part through the post, rushed upstairs and tried to fit it.It fit but didn't hold the shower head........lots of nasty bad language.....then thought have I fitted it upside down....you got it.

    Re: Online fraud

    Hi Backfoot

Well it's very hard to tackle a type of fraud that is perfect online as it's fairly undetectable.

My proposals would be around a few issues:- dealing with cardholder not present fraud is the perhaps the first thing that could be looked at straight away. There are now systems that can prevent online credit card fraud based on the system of "something you have and something you know". This would prevent fraudsters skimming your details and using those to clone your card.

Charging for emails is a long standing concept but would immediately stop the problem of spamming overnight - over 95% of all email traffic is spam, if you created a system that charged 1p for every email like our current postal system, I suspect spamming would be massively reduced.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

    Cheers

    Re: Online fraud

    Hi Jason,

It is something I worry about as I use the internet for banking, share dealing and purchases.Touch wood never been a victim to online fraud but I do use a good firewall and keep it up to date.I am not a techie,so I suppose I am taking a risk when I use the internet but on balance I think the advantages outweigh the risks.

Yesterday, the shower head holder broke.I got on the internet, googled for a spare, phoned a supplier, made a small credit card purchase and hopefully will fit the part today. It's just so convenient and efficient.

Anything that can be done to improve security is to be welcomed.Do you think that there are things that can be done?
