The broker is right. The No claims discount is transferable to your mum in these circumstances.

The reason they do this, is that normally one person is named as the policyholder and their spouse/partner is just named on the policy. It may be that they both had equal access to the car and therefore the discount built up was jointly earned by them. Therefore if one of them passes away, why shouldn't their spouse or partner have the benefit of the discount.

    No claims discount transfer

    Hi,

Im just in the middle of trying to sort out insurance for my mum as my dad passed away recently, im going through a broker but one thing he said didnt make a whole lot of sense to me and its got me a little worried.

My mum has been a named driver on various policies over quite a number of years but she has never actually been a policy holder, therefore my thinking was she had no no claims bonus. Now I know that recently insurers are offering named driver no claims bonuses as well but by my reckoning that would give her at most 2 years.

What the broker is saying is, my dads 9 years + no claims is transferable to my mum i.e tranferable between husband and wife. Now to me that doesnt make any sense but im the first to admit im not used to dealing with car insurance.

Has anyone heard of this before or had any experience?
