Stick to your guns Chris, they should replace like with like and if your damaged camera had this record feature then your replacement should also. Advise them in writing that you will not accept their offer and stress to them that their policy stipulates "replacement cost" or whatever wording your policy states. If they still refuse ask the claims superintendent or claims manager to deal with it. If still not happy write to the Managing Director.

They are trying to beat you down, don't let them

new for old policies usualy have in very small print, = allowing for wear and tear, as your camera was 4 years old they would look at what the trade would offer you for it.

New for Old Insurance - Digital Camera

My beloved (4 years old Coolpix 8700) digital camera recently became drenched and has now been deemed by iVal (working for Barclays) to be beyond economic repair.

The camera was £900 when new and a 'semi-pro' model which was (and still is by today's standards) feature rich (which was why I bought it..)

Now after going through a bunch of cameras that they thought was appropriate that REALLY didnt match the specs of my camera we have come to a halt.. They are currently saying they will only match the specs up to a Digital SLR (Nikon D60).. which does match and mostly exceed the specs of my original camera however theres one feature it's missing i.e. the ability to record movies..I came up with the Nikon D90 (twice the price of the D60 at around £700) which does match/exceed my original camera including the ability to record movies.

They say that there's no way they are replacing my camera for a top of the line DSLR and they cant match every specification. Am I unreasonable to escalate this issue? it is difficult to match an old item but if a same spec item IS available surely they should supply this as 'new for old' ?
