Re: New build 2 bed flat, high energey consumption?

    Hi romanof21,

Looking at your last post and the appliances you have listed 13 kWh per day is a possible amount.

The two items that are going to boost the number of units you are using is the water heating and the electric heating.

Don’t use the other meters in the communal area as a basis to judge your own consumption, just because your meter has a higher number displayed than the meters for other properties it doesn’t mean you are using more.

Meters when fitted don’t necessarily start at zero; therefore your meter may have been a higher reading than your neighbours to begin with. Alternatively you and the others in the building may use similar amounts but your reading is high due to the previous tenant using more than everyone else.

Even if you monitored all the meters and your usage was the highest, it wouldn’t necessarily justify anything as everyone’s usage varies from property to property and due to lifestyle.

My advice in this situation and to address your concerns would be to contact E.ON and ask to speak with the consumption department, they are a specialised team who will go through each appliance with you, ask how often each is used and explain how much (in kWh) each appliance will be using.

If they feel that the figures are high based on the information you provide, they will investigate this further for you.

If it gets to the stage where the usage can’t be explained and you are still concerned with the consumption, a check meter can be installed to see if your meter is running accurately. These tests cost £93 and this is payable in advance, if the meter turns out to be faulty E.ON will refund the value of the work and cover the cost, if the meter is accurate, you don’t get the £93 back.

This cost is why it is important to speak with the consumption team first and investigate how much your appliances are using.

    Brian

I did a new reading today to see what it was for 24 hour usage. It was 13kw/h that was used. this was for fridge and immersion heater plus the extraction system that I shut off at 5pm when I got home. The oven was used for 30 minutes and the hob for 5 to boil pasta. tv was on for about 3 hours and 2 people using laptops for about 2 hours each. flat mate had lights on in his room for about 2 hours and I ran the dishwasher that night and had the low energy bulb lamp on for about 2 hours in the lounge.

A fan on it's own wont use much.

One option is to turn things on and off and keep looking at the meter. The disc (if it has one) shouldn't move when everything is off.

The fan/ventalation system is pretty much just an extraction fan..there is a vent in each room so it pulls out the old air. I figured it was on since we moved in and all flats have them so I figured it was meant to stay on all the time. the book for the flat mentions that it runs 24hrs/day. The lighting in the flat are those small hallogen ones that are pretty common now a days. The heating has been off for atleast a month now if not more. I shut the fan system off..I don't know if this will have an adverse affect on the air quality inside or not. I gave E.On our reading for today and will give them one in two weeks to monitor if there is excessive energy consumption.

The heating and the fan/ventilation system (particlarly if it is air conditioning?) will be what is using the power. Lighting doesn't use much - you can leave an energy saving bulb on all night for 1p.

New build 2 bed flat, high energey consumption?

I recently moved into a 2 bed new build flat that is contained in a block of flats with shops below. It uses all electricity as there is no gas. so far since the 19th of January we've used over 2,000 kw/h. There are two of us in the flat and we both work during the day all week. The things that run all day are the fridge and a built in fan/ventalation system. We run a small dishwasher every 2 days or so (uses 0.7 kw/h a wash) and a washing machine (uses 0.4 kw/h a cycle) that we run 3 times a week. We tumble dry some things for about 30min a week as we dry them half way. We didn't use the computers for a couple months as we didn't have internet when we moved in. we watch tv in the evening but shut it off at the mains before bed and while at work. We also keep an energy efficient bulb on in the lounge during eves. Hob and oven are used for normal dinners in the eve. Hot water heater is on for about 2.5 hours a day. We've used electric heat mostly for the lounge but only when we were in and in the bedrooms for about an hour in the morning but they've been off now for a month. we're frugal with the lighting as we hardly use them. We're are not even yet through the full quarter and I can't think while the usage is so high. As a side note, I looked at the meter today in the cubbard and our flat had the highest consumption out of the floor. the next one down was 5,000 kw/h less than ours.
