Moving into a brand new building new phone what is the best option?

    Hi there,

I am in London NW6 currently rent my own studio, have BT phone line + O2 broadband. I only use internet never use the home phone and don't own a TV.

Saturday I move to a new 1 bedroom apartment, it is a brand new building so my flat has never had a line in it before. I called BT about this and they tell me I need to pay £122.50 to get the line installed no way around it? is this true? are there any deals or codes I can quote to get installed for free?

The landlord (owns the whole building) has told me his electrictions have wired up lines and a socket to every room, he has had Sky installed to the building so I can order a box and I considering doing that getting my phone line, broadband through Sky if this will avoid me the £122.50 BT installation charge in favour of Sky doing this work. I don't want TV so would never want those SKY services. Also I have heard SKY broadband is not so good and my O2 broadband has been flawless I really want to stick with it.

Any and all advice is much appreicated thanks.

You can get BT to install a new line free by calling 0800 800 150 and ask for the 'New line free connection offer'.

It's an 18 month contract and you must make 10 calls per month but if you just get the basic call package ie. free weekend calls then any calls you make then, free, will count.

Only thing to watch is if you are still in contract with BT for line rental/call package at the moment and if this offer doesn't cover moving home.

Moneysavingexpert.com has all the info and BT advisors pop up there regularly to assist.

Unless Sky have a similar offer then there would be line installation fee (BT Openreach charge providers including BT retail around £100 for line installations, it's up to them what they charge the customer).

I've got a similar problem in that I have to pay the stupid connection charge, but they say I have to be tied into a 12 month line rental contract which frankly is a bloody scam. I don't want to be with BT. They have poor customer service, poor broadband (which to be me is the most important thing) and poor TV. Not to mention you get charged the ends of the earth for it.

How can I get my phone line connected and not get tied into a lame contract with BT?
