Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Hi, I am looking at buying a new car and Motorpoint has appeared on the radar because of price. HAs anyone used them? Any good or bad points? The car is UK spec but only comes with a 2 rather than 3 year warranty. I intend to keep the car for 3-years so that won't affect any resale value. Thanks

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
I always revert back to 'fair car / fair price'. Despite having never used them, if the car is right, the price is right and they do what they say they'll do then they have got to be ok... Any of the type of car you're after knocking round your local main dealer for similar money? They may try to price match...
You gotta tie yourself to the mast my friend, and the storm will end.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
My employer has bought several cars from Motorpoint. Would recommend. Good service and cars have all been good quality. Check if the car is an import if warranty less than 3 yrs. Dlr will sell a years additional warranty for about £400. Good luck.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
The car will most definitely be an import hence the 2 year warranty. Sometimes there "UK spec" isn't quite the same as a "UK model" (ie alloy wheels would be different, but they would have alloy wheels none the less). 2 cars in the last 5 years from them and no problems with the cars, both were Fords, originally from Netherlands or Germany I think. I get them serviced locally by dealer. My only gripe with Motorpoint is the sales technique. They really push every add-on heavily. Been close to hanging up the phone with the sales rep. I want the car with no frills hence the reason for buying from supermarket. If I wanted a £300 warranty, £200 cleaning & polish kit etc I'd go elsewhere anyway...... stay strong and say no to everything and you should walk away happy.
Good choice of stock though and most times prices have been unbeatable. Also consider www.trade-sales.co.uk in Slough, but not as big or as good choice of stock. Good luck!

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
I used Motorpoints internet sales site to organize the purchase and part exchange of my old car for an Astra ctdi. Because I live in Scotland, it was arranged for the viewing and purchase to be at the Glasgow branch. All went well initially - but I was assumed to pay the last installment of my finance on the old car which was a standing order on the *28th* of each month. I ordered the car on the 12th of the month and was phoned by the Derby branch that they wanted the deal done in Glasgow on thursday the *27th* of that month. They said that if it didn't happen then, the part exchange would lose a calander month in the glasses car valuation guide and they stood to lose £500. I explained that I couldn't get to Glasgow that day due to infant care - but they basically pushed me into this. So, I went to Glasgow, signed the deal, and swapped the paperwork and left my old car with them. I assumed that, as now they had possession of my old car and it's paperwork, I could then cancel my standing order with my bank. Driving my new Astra back home, I cancelled the standing order with my bank. Their car now being part exchanged on 27th of the month and my payment due on the 28th of the month. Got phoned a few days later to say that the final payment hadn't been made to my old cars finance company. I am now being taken to court by Motorpoint for non payment. And was threatened that Motorpoint would repossess my new astra for non payment ! A hearing date has been set in DERBY county court when the deal was struck in Scotland. Take note, Motorpoint record every phone call to and from their branches. I asked for a copy and got SOME of them but not the important ones for my defence. Will post the outcome when it's all over.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Hi you can ask for your county court hearing to be heard near your home. I had a similer problem with Pipex who had a debt collecting agency summon me to a county court hearing in Manchester over 100 miles away from my home, I consulted a solicitor who told me i could have the hearing near my home. Pipex finnally admited i did not owe them anything so the case was dropped.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Hi, I bought an MGTF from them about 4 years ago and it was a good deal except I only got one key. I didn't find this out until I had done all the paperwork and got the VR doc and the single key. A replacement key was at least £80. Worth asking about before agreeing the sale.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
I've just spent £12000 on a car from motorpoint yesterday and only got one key. Went home and looked through the paper work to find it has never been serviced either. To say I wasnt happy would of been an understatment. Anyway, I decided to go back today and was told "you've got what you've got, sorry cant help you". Somehow I dont think a main dealer would of treated me like that. I've just priced up a new key at £144 and i've had to book it in for a service at £174. All within 24 hours of buying it. Bargain...

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
I had a very simillar experience with motorpoint only three weeks ago. I bought a Mazda 2 only 18 months old from them. When I went to collect the car I asked for the service book but unfortunately it was digital and the service history was on Mazda's database. It was already after 6PM and it was not possible to contact Mazda and I accepted the salesman's reassurance as I had travelled 70 miles to Burnley to collect the car. Two days later when I called at the Mazda garage, they could not find a service history. I immediately contacted Motorpoint and they did not want toknow.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Our VW Golf is nearly three years old now. Bought new from Motorpoint Newport. Much much cheaper than UK dealer sourced car for same spec. We will loose much less sterling in depreciation co we paid so much less! Highly recommend as we recommend to our families. Note the referral bonus never got paid, we put that down to carelessness on our part. KevanS

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
I did buy a car from them around 10 years ago and didn't experience any problems with them at all. My car was UK spec and only had a one year warranty. I had one small issue with some slight rust appearring under the wing mirrors, which I discovered was a "known concern". Ford customer services were initially a bit "sniffy" about it because they said it was an imported vehicle. However, they backed down very rapidly when I pointed out that they are all Focus' are manufactured in Spain and that irrespective of where it was purchased it still bears a Ford badge. The repair was carried out free of charge. The only other thing you might want to bear in mind is that because Motorpoint are not franchised dealers, the vehicle is initially registered to them and then re-registered to you. Effectively this makes you the second owner on the log book. In my case it was registered to them one day, and to me the following day. The invoice shows the delivery mileage (in my case 4!) so it's pretty obvious that this is an administrative process and was never an issue as far as I was concerned. I still have the vehicle, so I don't know if it would have been a problem if I'd tried to sell it. To be honest, if anyone queried this it's simple enough to explain why you're not the first owner and if you weigh that against the cost saving, it's really a no-brainer. It's a lot more common now to buy vehicles in this way so I can't see why it would ever be a problem.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
if the golf is a import your resale value will be a whole lot less than a uk supplied model ,so you need to bear this in mind ,you might save in the intial sale but lose when you come to sell or px this can wipe out the money you saved in the first place ,in present climate i would get your local dealer to price match iam sure they need the buisness if they can match or get close forget motorpoint ,any aftersale problems are shown on this forum, not very good!, a main delear would be more helpful

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Prior to purchasing a new vehicle from Motorpoint, I and other members of my family had previously personally imported about 6 vehicles from an Opel dealer in Zeebrugge, Belgium. It is true the spec can vary slightly - in every case though the spec of the vehicles we purchased was higher than the UK spec at the time. The re-sale value of these vehicles was never affected as a result of it being imported and it was never an issue with prospective purchasers. As long as you have the relevant documentation showing that all the taxes have been paid I can't see it makes any difference. As I said in my previous post - very few vehicles are manufactured in the UK now, so virtually any vehicle you buy is going to be an "import" anyway. If you're still nervous about Motorpoint, you might want to try www.autoebid.com. They run a reverse auction, where you state the vehicle you want and they invite dealers to quote the lowest price. Only if you decide to buy at the price quoted do you have to pay their fee - about £350 from memory. I have also bought from them without any problem.

Re: Motorpoint: has anyone had experience of them?
Isn't bidding a bit stressful in that you don't know for sure if you're going to win it? If you want to bid - you could go to ebay and not pay a a buyers fee. Mind you, that could be a concern as you don't know who you're buying from. Key here is to make sure you look at their feedback, and make sure it's 100% and for selling cars - not their own personal stuff, with just the one car for sale. There is another supermarket that has the ability to reserve a car online which is carland.com. However, if you're going to reserve a car online, make sure that you can get your reservation fee back if you want to cancel - whatever the reason! Carsite.co.uk have cars listed at cheaper prices than supermarkets, and have an RAC inspection too that you can view online before you decide to purchase. They do have bidding too (ebay motors seller of the year) - but also have Buy it Now's for those that don't want to bid. They sell cars for less, because they are not a dealer, but act as an agent for the leasing company, so don't buy the cars themselves. I've not experience Motorpoint, but they are probably similar to any other car supermarket.
