    Re: Motorbike insurance write-off

If the Insurers have deducted the "Salvage Value" from the amount they paid you then the bike BELONGS to you, it does not belong to the Insurers.

You can either scrap the vehicle or break it and sell the parts. Remember to advise the DVLA once the vehicle has been scrapped / broken

When you claimed for the bike, did you send the Insurance company the vehicle registration document. The Insurers may have sent the document off to the DVLA to confirm written off, therefore you have not received licence renewal form or fine. The Insurers probably technically own the bike as they have settled the claim for bikes value less excess and scrappage charge. But the Insurers appear to left the bike with you, so you can do what you want with it. Give your Insurers a phone call to see if this is the case.

This is the meaning of C- write off

Category C Insurance Write Off - the vehicle is repairable but the parts and labour would exceed the value of the car. This is a tricky situation as there are plenty of amateur and professional mechanics who could use second hand parts to repair these vehicles at much lower prices than the list costs for parts and labour.

If you fix the bike, you will need to have it inspected &MOT and then register it again with the DVLA. I am not sure of the exact process. See Directgov site http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/index.htm

    Motorbike insurance write-off

I'm hoping somebody can help me with a couple of insurance issues I have.

I had a motorbike accident back in Nov 08 in which was written off as category C. The insurance company made me a payment for the vehicle from which was deducted £100 as a "scrappage charge". I thought if a vehicle was written off the insurer takes possession of the vehicle, however I am still in possession of the vehicle, so am I meant to assume the £100 was the buy back value from the insurer?

My second question is since the accident the vehicle has remained unrepaired in my garden and due to being forgetful I hadn't remebered the road tax ran out a couple of months ago. However I have received no reminder/fine from the DVLA, am I meant to assume as the vehicle is technically written off no tax is due or a sorn declaration is required? if so, how do I go about getting the back back into the system?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Stuart
