Is there a mortgage helpline that I can call to get information about payments and other things ? Everytime I search on the internet for one all I find are those offered by mortgage lenders about the products they offer.

Yes, anything as formal as a helpline costs money so it will only be done by someone who wants to sell something to you. You can ask questions on this forum or, if you find a good independent mortgage advisor, (s)he should answer your questions without putting any pressure on you. Some building societies and banks have useful help pages on their sites.
