Re: Mobile phone with laptop connectivity

thanks so much for your help applecharlie. I will go for 3 the one plan. I will try out the signal with my laptop if unsatisfactory can always return phone and get out of deal in 7 days. I will then have to go for BT broadband reluctantly as will hardly use the landline.

The 3 salesperson will know what tethering is and as far as I am aware, The One Plan does include it.

On Vodafone, however, specific tethering bundles cost extra per month. You're looking about £15 per month for a 3 GB allowance. This would be on top of your mobile allowance too.

Your speed would all depend on how good the signal is in your area so you would have to check with either provider.

It really is up to what your going to using - given your previous post though, I think you would be financially better off with 3 if I am correct.

    Hope I've helped.

I am considering a mobile phone contract iphone 4 with 3 network that gives me unlimited data. I wonder if I need to check for tethering as well, not sure what this is but will ask the sales guy and also whether I will be limited in any way due to the fair usage policy. Is the speed OK when connecting via iphone 4 on 3 network or vodafone even?

Re: Mobile phone with laptop connectivity

I would not recommend it and I am sales advisor for a mobile phone company.

Downloading movies requires a large amount of data and would like burn through any internet package you have very quickly and result in high OOB (out of bundle) charges which vary depending on the network.

From personal experience, I had a dongle which in one month (while I was waiting for my broadband to be installed), I was able to use 8GB worth of data - simply by streaming TV programs through BBC iPlayer. As I only had 3GB allowance, I ended up with a £150 bill.

If you do decide to use your mobile to get your laptop online, ensure you have a large data package or tethering allowance.

    Mobile phone with laptop connectivity

Can anyone give me their views on using a mobile phone (perhaps on 3G network) to create wifi hotspot and use laptop/netbook to browse, download movies etc. This was I can save on broadband, landline or getting a separate dongle.
