Hello,

I have never had interenet at home before as I have always been of the opinion that i spend all day on the internet so why would I need it at home.  However, a few incidences have come up recently where it would have been useful to have the internet - i.e finding a map.

I would say that i am a really low profile user and would literally just use the net for 10/15 mins at weekends.  What is the best deal for me? It doesn't need to be superfast and I won't be downloading lots of things.  Also I don't want to sign up to an 18 month contract as I may be moving house soon and i am only borrowing a laptop from a friend at the moment.

 Please advise if there are any low cost, non contract broadband packages out there? Or perhaps I should just get dial up?

First of all - have you looked at moneysupermarket.com guide to broadband? It can be found here.

You'll also find a link there to low-usage and short-term deals for broadband.

My own experience is if you have broadband access at work, you'll find dial-up at home painfully slow. Many websites thesedays are optimised for broadband access and it could be very frustrating downloading that map that you imagine takes 10-15 minutes, but ends up taking twice as long.

If you're moving, you should easily be able to take the broadband with you but I think that some companies do insist that the 12/18 month contract period starts again. If you do decide to go for broadband, look closely into how easy it is to move home [and any costs incurred] before you commit.

Without doubt the best deal for you would probably be Namesco Bronze or Namesco Silver - these are designed as near to be like Pay as You Go Broadband deals and come with a free modem and no monthly contract.

 I have just read though, that there is a £50 cancellation policy if I cancel before 12 months - not so contract free!

 Do you know any others where this is not the case? I don't mind paying slightly more a month i.e £15 as long as I don't have to pay a penalty fee.

There are no deals that come without a contract where you won't have to pay some form of cancellation fee if you leave inside the first 12 mths.
