    Lottery numbers....

Looks like I got the house price prediction right last year...... maybe I should turn to working out the lottery numbers!?

Any middle class fund managers wanna offer a marxist a large salary?

    Re: Lottery numbers....

House prices can either go up, stay the same or go down. Unfortunately there are lots more permutations for what the lottery numbers will be :(

    Re: Lottery numbers....

Numbers greater than 31 are generally worth putting down as are consecutive numbers, but only because these numbers are used less by other people and so any payout wont be shared between as many tickets. There's no strategy that's likely to make more than you spend but there no harm in dreaming...

true and as luck would have it dreams came true although not as big as we all wanted.

5 numbers 2 on my line and and 3 on my wifes split on her 2 lines so we won a grand total of SOD ALL!! LOL

We have more luck with scratch cards and her bonus ball at work.

Somebody a lot smarter than me, once said 'a gambler is a man who picks his own pocket.' Instead of wasting money on the lottery (which I think the odds are 14 million to 1 of winning) if you really must gamble in this way, then put your money into premium bonds, at least you get your stake back - and you could win a million!

    Re: Lottery numbers....

I have to say that I agree that premium bonds are better. The payouts are tax free, you get your stake back when you want and the prizes are paid out in a fixed proportion to the funds put in (is it 5%pa?). There's no big chunk going to admin or worthy causes. If I wanted to give to charity, I'd do it direct so that they got the tax as well. If I wanted to dream about winning a million, I'd go for the premium bonds.

    Re: Lottery numbers....

Maxstream, there is no fixed proportion allocated, with regard to holdings, although there is a rough guide that you 'might' get as a return. I have had the maximum holding for the past 12 months (July 2007) and I have won 450 in 50's and 100's. I have decided that I would rather have a fixed income from this cash, so I am drawing out my holdings. However, if a little gamble is what you want, you really can't lose with premium bonds simply because you get your stake back 100%.

    Re: Lottery numbers....

sky walker your ability not to read properly astounds me !

ive said i normally do 1 line each which £2 per week not £10 but this weekend only i decidied to do 2 lines and some scratch cards.

so £2 per week is just over £100 per year.

i dont do bonds because i dont trust them.

the value of what you put in isnt the same as what you get back given the rate of inflation and ever increasing world food costs and high petrol prices

Red Army - you are quite obviously smarter than I am. So lets agree to ignore each others comments.

    Re: Lottery numbers....

I've just checked and the payout % for premium bonds is currently 3.4% but it changes from time to time.

    http://www.nsandi.com/products/pb/rates.jsp

Whether on not that beats inflation depends on which inflation rate you use and which tax band you are in (prizes are not taxed). The sensible option is to put money into a savings account with a high street bank or building society. while premium bonds and lottery tickets are indeed fun with the former giving better odds than the latter.

£100 invested in premium bonds is likely to be worth £103.40 after 1 year (the bonds plus £3.40 in prizes) but the deviation between the amounts won is very large. Most £100s will win nothing while the odd bond will win £1mil.

£100 spent on lottery tickets is likely to get £50 in prizes.

    Re: Lottery numbers....

My 30k didn't even achieve 2% - never mind 3.4% - which is why it's coming out, and going into an account that pays 7.2% AER. My dad had 20 quid in bonds for 37 years, and never won anything. But at least he did get his 20 quid back.

I did notice recently that a 1 Million winner had less than 10 pounds invested, so there is a slim hope!
