I notice the message above is long term ago, but I just want to write about my similar experience with BT and AOL.
I ordered a BT line, first they told me there is a tag on it, so I was not able to use AOL broadband. I called up BT couple of times spending lots of hours on the phone, and BT cancelled by line by mistake and reordered the new BT line for me (They charge me 75 pounds for cancellation which I later dispute on it). I got the new BT line again with a tag on it. This time I called up BT and BT said I got to ring 'AOL' to remove the tag. I ring AOL and AOL ask me to ring BT. so forward and backward, then I understand what's going on. actually the tag is on the line, it means probably that the previous account holder of that phone line has internet, so it has a tag on it. So that means the internet service provider need not be AOL! AOL is just the service provider I would like to use. OK so I then called BT again saying the same thing I explained above, I got one amazing anwser,' Madam, I don't know which internet provider that the previous line holder was using, so I can't actually advice you anything, you better find out which internet provider it is'. common sense. How can I know how is that 'previous line holder' and what internet he is using. BT just gave me the line with a tag on it. How can I ever know???
So .. the issue resolved as follow:
I called up BT again, saying... I now want to use BT broadband instead of AOL broadband. So can you see if there are any ways to remove the BT tag? IMMEDIATELY, they pass me to another department and the tag got removed. And then, when they ask me if I want to join BT broadband, I said I would consider later.
I now have another house that need broadband. I just worry the same thing will happen again. It is completely nonsense and out of order. I cannot see why so much trouble would be generated and so much time involved for a broadband service. My opinion is if I buy a line from BT, I should not expect any trouble linked to that line. And those service providers always use 0845, 08.. phone, and long waiting queues, never call back. if you make a complaint, no use. I think my best advice is to make an email complaint, that's how I got my 75 pounds back.
I think I will write to BT if I got BT tag problem again in the new house.
